Description of Job The Director of Business Operations at the History Colorado Center is responsible for driving organizational growth through front-line customer service and entrepreneurial activities that include a venue rental program, retail operations, guest experiences, and external partner and community engagement. The position oversees major institutional initiatives, such as the Colorado Day celebration and marquee exhibition launches, ensuring exceptional public engagement and strong reputational growth to build the organization's audiences and impact. Work includes but is not limited to the following: Description of duties: Ensuring visitors feel welcomed, cared for, and engaged throughout their visit at the History Colorado Center Cultivating a distinct and energetic on-site experience at the History Colorado Center that connects to the organization's mission, programs, and a sense of belonging Managing a customer-service focused and friendly Guest Services team that supports visitors and flexibly supports active use of the building Working closely with History Colorado's exhibition, curatorial, collections, and education teams to develop programs and offerings that meet audience needs and grow engagement Collaborating with facilities, security, and building support teams to ensure seamless building and service coverage during all open and event hours Connecting visitors to the continuum of History Colorado offerings, including retail, cafe, venue rentals, educational programs, and more Making data-driven business decisions that maximize History Colorado Center's connection with both core and developing audiences Pursuing Revenue Generation to support long-term organizational sustainability Developing and implementing business plans for key services at the History Colorado Center Managing vendor contracts that maximize History Colorado Center's revenue-earning potential Informing and meeting targeted annual revenue projections for admissions, retail sales, group sales, and venue rentals Serving as lead on-site manager for venue rental and catering services at the History Colorado Center and Grant Humphreys Mansion, managed through a vendor contract, Supervising internal venue rental and sales staff at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion Coordinating collaborations with the Rendezvous Cafe, managed through a vendor contract Maximizing revenue from retail operations at the History Colorado Center Using an entrepreneurial approach to developing new revenue-earning opportunities Expanding group sales and add-on opportunities for visitors to the History Colorado Center Making data-driven business decisions that maximize History Colorado Center's earning potential Developing & Maintaining External & Community Relationships Maintaining established relationships and developing new external relationships that extend the reach of the History Colorado Center Serving as a central point of contact among nearby cultural district neighbors, including the Denver Art Museum, Denver Public Library, and Clyfford Still Museum Planning and hosting key community celebrations, including exhibition openings and the annual celebration of Colorado Day (August 1st) Growing History Colorado Center's reputation in the Denver market and the cultural sector through relationships and attendance at community events Connecting partners and stakeholders with History Colorado programs and resources Serving as a spokesperson for the History Colorado Center in key stakeholder meetings and occasional media interviews Leadership Providing vision, data, and creativity in developing shared programs and projects with teams across History Colorado, and ensuring consistent communication and collaboration Developing departmental budget and participating in setting revenue projections and targets for the History Colorado Center Inspiring confidence, certainty and stability for staff and visitors at the History Colorado Center Tracking trends and making quick, data-driven decisions about business operations in real time Fostering the maximum potential of the History Colorado Center as the flagship property within the History Colorado system, generating visitation and revenue that helps sustain the whole organization Making data-driven decisions that maximize potential and services within available resources Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights This announcement is not governed by the selection processes of the classified personnel system. Annually Minimum Requirements:
Proven Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Seven (7) years of full-time professional experience in non-profit business operations, cultural venue management, hospitality, or related field Five (5) years of full-time professional experience developing and implementing business strategies that drive revenue growth Three (3) Experience developing and managing a budget of over $500,000 in revenue and expenses Two (2) years of customer service or relevant customer or public-facing responsibilitiesOR Education and Experience:
Five (5) years of full-time professional experience in non-profit business operations, cultural venue management, hospitality, or related field and Masters Degree from an accredited institution or college in Business Administration, Public Administration, Non-Profit Management, Hospitality, Museum Studies, Economics, or another relevant field will count for 1 year of required experience.Preferred Qualifications:
Proven track record leading and supervising a dynamic team of at least 3- 5 direct reports, particularly in a museum or hospitality setting Experience managing third-party vendors and contractors, including setting goals and monitoring performance Strong communication and collaboration skills to work across teams and departments to implement shared goals and objectives Experience coordinating operational logistics for programs, events, or group visits in an entertainment, cultural, or public-facing environment Record of supporting revenue-generating activities such as admissions, retail, programming, or events, including familiarity with operational financial controls and Point of Sale systems.
