- Full-time Position Summary The Director of Warehouse Operations is a strategic leadership position responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of Food for Greater Elgin's warehouse, logistics, food safety, building maintenance, and food distribution programs.
This role requires a hands-on, safety‑driven leader with a passion for community service who can ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and high‑quality operations. The director will manage a diverse team of staff and volunteers while fostering a culture of continuous improvement aligned with the organization's mission to combat food insecurity. Key Responsibilities Warehouse & Inventory Management Supervise all daily warehouse activities, including receiving, sorting, inspecting, and storing perishable and non‑perishable food products. Ensure accurate inventory management including cycle counts, rotation, and regular audits. Develop and enforce operational policies and procedures to optimize warehouse space, efficiency, and product integrity. Coordinate with food sourcing programs and partners to ensure adequate food supply for distribution. Maintain compliance with USDA food handling and storage standards. Food Safety & Sanitation Serve as the organization's food safety lead, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local food safety regulations. Oversee implementation of temperature monitoring, allergen controls, and contamination‑prevention practices. Conduct regular food safety inspections, corrective actions, and staff/volunteer training. Maintain documentation required for the food bank, and regulatory inspections. Logistics & Distribution Oversee all logistics, including scheduling food pickups, deliveries, mobile distributions, and partner agency support. Manage the maintenance and safe operation of the organization's fleet (vans, refrigerated trucks) and warehouse equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks). Ensure DOT, CDL, and vehicle safety compliance. Leadership & Team Management Train, mentor, and supervise warehouse staff and a large volunteer workforce. Foster a collaborative, mission‑driven, and results‑oriented culture. Lead by example with a hands-on approach, including operating warehouse equipment and assisting with physical tasks as needed. Ensure all staff and volunteers comply with organizational policies, safety standards, and operational procedures. Safety, Personal Safety & Compliance Develop, implement, and enforce robust safety programs covering OSHA compliance, PPE use, , and emergency response. Conduct regular safety drills, incident investigations, and risk assessments. Promote a culture of personal safety, situational awareness, and injury prevention for staff, volunteers, and guests. Maintain a safe, secure, and clean working environment at all times. Building & Facility Maintenance Oversee building maintenance, including HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, plumbing, dock equipment, and general facility upkeep. Coordinate with vendors and contractors for repairs, inspections, and capital improvements. Ensure the facility meets health, sanitation, and safety standards required for food storage and distribution. Track and manage facility maintenance schedules, logs, and compliance documentation. Strategic Planning & Budgeting Work with senior leadership to develop and execute operational strategies aligned with organizational goals and budget. Track and report on KPIs related to warehousing, food safety, distribution, and facility performance. Prepare and manage the departmental budget, monitoring expenditures and recommending capital improvements. Requirements Proven experience in a Warehouse Supervisory or Operations Management role. Desired experience in food safety and regulatory compliance. Experience overseeing building or facility maintenance in a warehouse, industrial, or food‑handling environment. Strong knowledge of OSHA standards , personal safety practices, and injury‑prevention programs. Ability to lead, manage, and motivate a diverse team of staff and volunteers in a fast‑paced setting. CDL or Class C license. (preferred) Forklift Certification. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs consistently throughout the shift. Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot basic equipment issues. High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in logistics, business, or related field preferred.
