About the Role Abel Lumber is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead procurement operations at our Gainesville, TX location. This role is responsible for sourcing lumber, building materials, and related products at the best possible cost, quality, and delivery terms. The Purchasing Manager will work closely with sales, operations, and yard staff to ensure we have the right inventory at the right time to keep our customers and crews moving. Key Responsibilities Source and purchase lumber, building materials, hardware, and related products from approved suppliers and mills. Negotiate pricing, payment terms, freight, and delivery schedules to maximize margin and protect supply continuity. Build and maintain strong vendor relationships; evaluate new suppliers and product lines as opportunities arise. Monitor market trends, lumber pricing, and commodity movements to time purchases strategically. Manage inventory levels, reorder points, and turn rates in coordination with the yard and sales teams. Issue, track, and reconcile purchase orders; resolve invoice discrepancies, shorts, damages, and returns. Coordinate inbound freight and logistics with carriers and the operations team to ensure on-time delivery. Forecast demand using sales trends, seasonality, and input from the sales team and key customers. Track and report on KPIs including cost savings, vendor performance, inventory turns, and fill rates. Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and applicable regulations. Qualifications 3+ years of purchasing, procurement, or buyer experience — lumber, building materials, or construction-related industry strongly preferred. Proven track record negotiating with vendors and managing supplier relationships. Strong understanding of inventory management, reorder planning, and demand forecasting. Comfortable reading lumber tallies, mill invoices, BOLs, and freight documents. Proficient with Microsoft Excel and ERP/inventory management software (experience with lumber-specific systems such as DMSi Agility, BisTrack, or Epicor LumberTrack is a plus). Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize in a fast-paced environment, and make sound decisions under pressure. High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, or related field preferred. Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
