AmeriCorps Youth Mentor Kern Community Mentoring AmeriCorps - KCSOS Bakersfield, CA Job Details Full-time | Contract From $2,371 a month 7 hours ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance Paid time off Vision insurance Qualifications Some college Collaboration High school diploma or GED School record keeping Math Collaboration with community partners Organizational skills Full Job Description Nine month, full-time positions are available for AmeriCorps members to serve as mentors in Kern County schools starting September 1, 2026 and ending May 31, 2027. Applicants must be available to serve site-specific schedules during the term of service. Program will attempt to place mentors in schools close to their homes. Positions are available in Bakersfield, Shafter, Wasco, McFarland, Delano, Arvin & Lamont.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MENTOR
Under general supervision, to implement the Kern Community Mentoring program by providing the following direct services: plan structured and meaningful mentor activities implement one-on-one and small group mentoring attend regular mentor training provided by program collaborate with agency staff to monitor mentee progress serve as a mentor and positive role model to targeted mentees report weekly on mentee contact logs and other important documents appraise mentee progress using evaluation instruments provided by program create and manage a schedule to ensure all mentees receive appropriate hours •Mentor specific duties will vary across school sites
AS AN AMERICORPS TEAM MEMBER
as a team, plan, implement and report on service projects to strengthen communities participate in and reflect on community service experiences participate in team meetings and other events promoting the AmeriCorps identity recruit and coordinate community volunteers participate in ongoing service specific training •Member development hours must not exceed 20% of the member's total service hours Member duties will not include any prohibited or unallowable activities as outlined in the Member Agreement.
LIVING ALLOWANCE AND BENEFITS
Full-time (approx. 40 hrs/week) $2371 monthly living allowance Child care benefits (for eligible full-time Members) Health insurance benefits (for eligible full-time Members) Student loan forbearance (for eligible members) $5,000 education award upon satisfactorily completing nine months of service and 1,200 hours The education award can only be used to pay student loans or for future college tuition and expenses. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident, and be at least 17 years old. Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; two years or more of college credits preferred. Experience with direct services for youth and/or community service programs preferred but not required. Competent in reading and math; good oral and written communication skills; good record keeping skills; strong organizational skills; good judgment; demonstrated commitment to public service; ability to appreciate the value and importance of cultural diversity; ability to work with people and organizations with different viewpoints; and ability to work collaboratively with schools, community-based organizations, public agencies, community partners, and other AmeriCorps members. Applicants must provide their own transportation to and from home and the principal service site and locations of trainings, team meetings, and community events. All applicants must be available to serve site specific schedules; some evenings or weekend days may be required.
SELECTION PROCEDURES

Paper applications are available at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, 1300 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301 and can be mailed if necessary. For more information, call (661) 852-5675. Qualified candidates are invited to submit an AmeriCorps application (including supplemental questions). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Priority will be given to candidates who apply by June 20, 2025. Candidates considered to meet the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for an interview. Interviews will be held by individual appointment. Upon selection, successful candidates will be required to submit fingerprints for a criminal records check and should be prepared to report to duty on September 1, 2025.
