Job Description

The intern program is available to any student who will be enrolled in one of the FUHSD schools as a junior or senior during the 2026-27 academic year. Fallbrook Public Utility District is providing students with exposure to career pathways In the water industry, including public outreach, construction, finance, and treatment plant operations. Internship Description Fallbrook Public Utility District is pleased to introduce a paid High School Summer Internship program designed to provide local students with meaningful, hands-on experience in public service, water utilities, and career pathways in the water industry. It will be an 8-week program running during the summer months while students are on summer break from school.
Program Overview Duration & Schedule:
Four hours per week for 8 weeks
Compensation:
$18.00 per hour The internship may continue beyond the summer period, not to exceed six (6) months, and 32 hours per week, or 960 total hours. What Interns Will Experience Participants will gain real-world exposure to multiple departments within the District, including: Accounting/Finance & Purchasing Public agency budgeting (operating vs. capital) Invoice processing and vendor payments Introduction to financial reporting High-level overview of rates and fees Customer Service Shadowing front-desk/call center staff Introduction to customer billing systems Observing service and public records requests How the District communicates during outages/emergencies Engineering Introduction to capital improvement projects Field visits with engineering staff Basics of infrastructure design and review How GIS supports planning and operations Collections Observation of line inspections and maintenance Overview of blockage prevention and response Field safety practices Coordination with Operations and Maintenance Construction & Maintenance Basic tool identification and safe handling Introduction to work orders and maintenance tracking Observation of preventative maintenance How crews plan and execute repairs Traffic control and job-site safety basics System Services How meter data supports billing and leak detection Introduction to cross-connection control/backflow How service calls are prioritized How field operations support customer service System Operations Introduction to regulatory compliance Basics of wastewater treatment processes Daily plant operations and log-keeping Facility safety protocols How SCADA supports real-time monitoring Public Relations & Social Media Learning about the District's social media outreach Helping to create posts and videos Program Culmination At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will deliver a brief presentation highlighting skills and knowledge gained, career insights learned, and personal reflections on the value of the program. It will presented the final week of the internship, August 24, to the board of directors and selected staff at the 4:00 p.m. board meeting.
Qualifications:
Applicants must: Be enrolled in one of the FUHSD schools Be a junior or senior the upcoming school year Must be 16 years old on or before the first day of the internship program Must be able to work one (1) four-hour day, determined by the district and the intern, per each of the 8 (eight) weeks of the program Must participate in all 8 (eight) weeks of the program Application Process Interested students should complete an online application at www.fpud.com under the Careers section All questions must be answered and submitted with the application A short essay question may be required during the application process All applications must be submitted online with a first review after June 8, 2026. IMPORTANT DATES & INFORMATION
The intern program will be a paid program offering the selected intern $18 per hour for hours worked on a bi-weekly basis to follow the normal payroll cycle of the District.
