Health and Wellness Fellow Organizational Relationship:
Reporting to Project Lead •
General Summary:
The Jakara Movement Health and Wellness Fellow will build relationships with participating students in the Khair Program and lead youth in a year-long commitment over a three-year program. The program is a leadership program for high school students, largely Punjabi and LatinX, in various regions in the Central Valley. The program will incorporate research, curriculum development, leadership training and development, and policy goals and advancement. We are hiring a lead in each of 6 counties - Kern (Bakersfield), Fresno, Stanislaus (Ceres), San Joaquin (Tracy), Sacramento and Sutter (Yuba City). You will largely be working with a cohort from Ridgeview High (Bakersfield), Central East & Garza High (Central Unified/Fresno), Central Valley High (Ceres), West High School (Tracy), Sheldon High (Sacramento) and River Valley High and Yuba City High Schools (Yuba City). In addition, we will be assigning ancillary responsibilities based on preferences around: communications, policy development, and health and wellness curriculum development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the development of working relationships with local high school students and build rapport through weekly meetings, retreats, and some weekend events Conducts research and surveys with students and school districts in compliance with any district policies Regular meetings with staff and other fellows around the project Develop a curriculum around substance abuse mitigation especially alcohol and vaping Help facilitate and implement locally-based ideas developed by the students Work with students and Jakara Movement community organizers, while recruiting and training new cohort members as needed, identify and develop program outcomes (including responses to local community events) goals, strategies, tactics, and timelines Regular meeting with high school cohorts as well as additional training of individual members in community organizing skills and execution, including workshops, informal meetings, and when possible, one-on-one trainings, especially as high schools are opening up following the
COVID-19
pandemic Develop content and materials for workshops, activities and lessons Make presentations to school bodies and other stakeholders and partners Be able to write and produce press releases, newsletters, flyers, blogs, usage of social media etc, to keep the membership and the general public informed. Train volunteers on how to perform these functions. Build links with other communities Support coalitions and joint projects with allied communities Organizing and patience with students and their families Additional Jakara Movement related tasks as determined by the project staff and local community organizers Provide program support as needed, including administrative support and volunteer supervision Performs administrative duties as assigned Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned Interest in completing coursework to become a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) Position Specifications Preference if employee has the following education/experience: Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Health, Social Work, Education or a related field preferred. Experience in youth organizing, highly considered Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong problem solving and leadership skills. Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Strong sense of order and organization. Ability to work within a fast-paced environment and handle multiple long and short-term tasks and projects simultaneously Ability to manage and develop long-term virtual relationships. Detail-oriented, resourceful, self-motivated and excellent follow through skills Well-developed interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all organization levels. Ability to work independently and as part of a team Proficiency or willingness to learn computer applications, including MS Office, Canva, Nationbuilder, Slack, database, and other web-based applications Strong communications skills, both written and verbal. CONTRACTOR
position, approximately 10 hours weekly. Candidate must have access to a vehicle (though initially due to COVID the work will be largely remote)
Payment:
The fellowship will pay a stipend of $12,000 per year. •
