Academic Program Specialist (Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Science) Florida State University - 4.3 Tallahassee, FL Job Details Full-time $40,000 a year 19 hours ago Qualifications Employee relationship building Full Job Description Department Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science l College of Arts & Sciences Responsibilities The Academic Program Specialist serves as a key member of the Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) Department, providing academic advising and support to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Environmental Science, Environmental Science and Policy, Geology, and Meteorology. This position plays a vital role in fostering student success by serving as the primary point of contact for both newly admitted and continuing students. Through personalized advising, guidance, and resource connection, the Academic Program Specialist helps students navigate their academic experience and achieve their educational goals. Advise undergraduate students in the development of academic plans and course schedules that support degree completion and educational goals. Take a proactive approach to academic advising by engaging with students, faculty, and staff, and providing timely, student-centered advising services. Interpret and apply university, college, and departmental policies and procedures to effectively guide students and support informed academic decision-making. Collaborate closely with faculty, college advising staff, and central advising units to evaluate and communicate major-specific requirements for current and prospective students. Promote student retention, academic success, and timely degree completion through proactive outreach, monitoring, and intervention strategies. Support and advise prospective transfer students from community and state colleges throughout the admissions and transition process. Partner with central advising units to coordinate and participate in academic advising events, orientation programs, and recruitment initiatives across university campuses as needed. Assist students with enrollment, registration, and course planning processes. Conduct follow-up outreach to ensure students are appropriately enrolled and progressing toward degree requirements in a timely manner. Assist with the collection, analysis, and reporting of data related to advising activities, student retention efforts, student success initiatives, academic program guides, and undergraduate bulletin updates. Assist the department with curriculum development, enrollment monitoring, and other undergraduate program initiatives as needed. Qualifications A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (
Note:
a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.) Preferred Qualifications Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with audiences. Experience interpreting academic program requirements and providing academic advising and guidance. Experience performing basic mathematical calculations and working with quantitative information. Knowledge of academic resources, support services, and referral processes available to students. Experience with academic program planning, development, assessment, and evaluation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, or equivalent software. Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to students, parents, faculty, and staff. Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously while meeting deadlines with minimal supervision. Customer service experience and/or experience working with students in an educational setting. Ability to interact with others in a professional, calm, and objective manner, particularly when addressing complex or sensitive situations. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships across departments and organizational levels. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and integrity. Ability to analyze and synthesize complex academic information from multiple sources while maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound judgment.
