JOB SUMMARY
The Student Support and Mentoring Program Facilitator supports at-risk secondary students by promoting academic success, school engagement, and social-emotional wellbeing. This role coordinates a volunteer mentoring program, collaborates with staff through MTSS processes, and connects students and families to needed resources - integrating student support, program coordination, and community partnerships to help students succeed in school and beyond.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in education, social work, human services or related field Minimum of two years of experience working with adolescents in an educational, mentoring, counseling, or youth development setting Experience working with at-risk or underserved populations preferred
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) meetings to identify and support students experiencing academic, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges. Review referrals and student information to determine eligibility for mentoring and support services. Recruit, support, and retain volunteer mentors through effective relationship building and regular communication. Research and plan mentoring activities that promote academic success and social-emotional development. Provide mentors with guidance and resources to support productive mentoring relationships. Coordinate mentor appreciation events and recognition efforts. Build supportive relationships with students and provide consistent encouragement and guidance. Support development of social, emotional, and life skills that promote student wellbeing and success. Encourage student participation in school activities, athletics, and community programs. Communicate with families regarding available services, parenting supports, and school engagement opportunities. Maintain regular communication with teachers to monitor student progress and identify classroom support needs Collaborate with counselors, administrators, therapists, social workers, and other school staff to coordinate student support strategies. Collect and monitor student data including attendance, academic progress, behavior, and assessments. Maintain program records and compile information to prepare reports. Support students transitioning between schools within the district. Assist with monitoring progress toward graduation requirements and support credit recovery efforts. Support postsecondary planning through career exploration, job fairs, and college tours. Engage in professional learning opportunities related to responsibilities of position. Complete all required training.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Provide support to school administrative and counseling staff as needed. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of adolescent development and social/emotional learning practices Understanding of MTSS frameworks and student support systems Ability to build trusting relationships with students, families, mentors, and staff Strong organization, communication, and coordination skills Ability to analyze student data and monitor progress toward goals Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with community partners Cultural competence and sensitivity when working with diverse populations Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative with minimal supervision In evaluating candidates for this position, Johnston Community School District may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
Frequent sitting; moderate standing, walking, climbing Occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and squatting Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Work is primarily performed in an indoor school setting with occasional travel between district and community locations Occasional flexible scheduling for meetings and student activities Moderate exposure to irritated or agitated individuals
