Job Description

Overview The Adoptive Parent Mentor is responsible for providing support services through education, access to information, group facilitation, resource sharing, peer support, and advocacy to adoptive families. In addition, Parent Mentors will assist in providing outreach for the MD Post Permanency Program. Qualifications and Education Requirements Lived experience as a foster and adoptive parent. Preferred Skills Understanding of trauma informed parenting practices. Familiarity with the unique issues to the adoptive population and commitment to child and family mental health, child welfare, foster care and adoption. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work in a team and independently. Ability to navigate and build relationships with adoptive families. Ability to prioritize and problem solve. Ability to communicate and express ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work cooperatively with others, both clients and colleagues. Additional Notes Each employee is required to complete (and maintain as necessary) a physical exam to include a TB screening, a criminal background check in identified jurisdictions, Child Protective Services Registries check in identified jurisdictions, and orientation training. Role and Responsibilities Serve as liaison in the foster and adoptive parent communities in introducing the program. Provide information, resource navigation and referrals and ongoing access to educational opportunities and information related to adoption or guardianship. Provide supportive services to assist adoptive families maintain stability in their permanent settings and increase the positive coping skills in parents and children. Facilitation of virtual peer support groups and social groups. Assist in building connections between families that result in peer support, informal respite care, and social activities. Participate in and encourage families' participation in community activities and events that promote adoption and guardianship. Present as a positive role model for clients and families. Work in partnership with therapist to ensure all clients are being effectively served.
