Job Description

Essential Duties Evaluate student participation in program activities and contribution to Action Project group work. Planning and assisting with leadership activities. Attend all program activities, modeling professional behavior for participants and helping them take advantage of networking opportunities. Relay information as appropriate to participants and facilitate communication with Faculty in Residence and Program Director. Report problems immediately (maintenance issues, illness, any other concerns). Supervise resident halls and monitor participant behavior to ensure compliance with University and program policies. Facilitate Action Project group work and assist instructors in skill-development workshops. Minimum Qualifications Availability during the entire program. Ability to work well with others for extended periods of time. Be 18 years of age or older. Interest in political leadership, public service, and women's representation. Preference will be given to former NEW Leadership Mississippi participants

Close vision is the vision ability required by this job Job Description Summary NEW Leadership Mississippi (NEW MS) Mentors must have a demonstrated interest in women's representation and politics and/or public service. They must agree to live on campus with the students for the duration of the NEW MS Summer Institute. They must also be either college seniors, graduate students, or recent college graduates who are originally from or currently reside in Mississippi. Ideally, they will have participated in the summer institute as undergraduate students and will thus be well-prepared to help current students take full advantage of the program. The primary purpose of the position is to ensure students have an intensive learning and mentoring experience. Mentors work with Faculty in Residence (FIRs) to guide up to five students in group work on an Action Project that culminates in a mock legislative committee hearing. They also assist instructors during skill-based workshops and serve as role models, demonstrating professionalism and engagement through their own participation in program activities. Finally, mentors closely monitor student behavior, communicate problems to FIRs and the Program Director, and help evaluate the participation and growth of students in their assigned group. Hours of Availability Mentors must remain on campus for the duration of the program, May 17-22, and reside in the assigned dormitory with students.
