Job Description
An employee in this class performs professional programming work in the planning, implementation, and marketing of a variety of senior programs, classes, educational seminars, and activities. Work includes developing, planning and coordinating senior recreation activities and classes to include both leisure and wellness; securing instructors for classes; promoting and marketing activities; teaching evidence-based classes (i.e. fall prevention) as well as exercise and wellness classes as needed; planning and coordinating senior events and day trips; designing and distributing newsletters and flyers; promoting programs through social media platforms and the department website; performing community outreach activities; collecting feedback from participants; and evaluating programs. Work also involves scheduling and supervising senior center volunteers; maintaining attendance records and records; assisting with managing and reporting on grants; and assisting with coordination of the Senior Games. Work involves significant public contact working with patrons to develop community programs, classes, and events that address the interests and needs of the community. Starting pay is $41,377 or DOQ Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates recreation programs, evidence-based health classes, workshops, activities, events, and field trips; secures instructors for classes; develops schedules and calendar of events offering a variety of activities including exercise, arts, education, games, socialization, and special events. Creates bimonthly newsletter, flyers, posters, brochures and disseminates information to market and promote interest in programs, events, and activities; publicizes programs through a variety of media outlets, social media and email blasts; updates center bulletin board. Plans, coordinates, and supervises day trips and special outings; makes travel arrangements; secures registrations; accompanies participants. Teaches HPDP (Health Promotion Disease Prevention) evidence-based classes in multiple locations including Matter of Balance and Living Health with Chronic Pain; maintains HPDP certifications. Recruits, trains, and supervises center volunteers; coordinates volunteers working at center events; plans and implements the volunteer banquet. Performs community outreach and represents the center in community events; serves as a vendor in special events; serves on various boards; assists coworkers in planning events. Collects and prepares information to document programs and assure compliance with the annual certification process (SCOPE tool). Assists with coordinating, planning and implementing the local Senior Games with municipal Parks and Recreation Departments. Develops a working rapport with community agencies to enhance senior programs; coordinates activities with local businesses and municipalities; serves on various boards. Performs a variety of departmental program support activities; opens the center in the mornings; decorates the center seasonally; sets up and takes downs for events; assists in maintaining clean and tidy center. Oversees fitness instructors; creates instructor timesheets. Assesses program effectiveness to identify recommend improvements to meet the needs of the senior populations; prepares, maintains and submits records and reports on programs. Participates in professional development and continuing educations to stay current with developments in the field of aging; maintains certifications. Additional Job Duties Performs related duties as required Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational program planning, development, implementation and administration. Considerable knowledge of standard resources, materials, and facilities utilized in a public recreational program. Working knowledge of community organizations and resources. Working knowledge of organizational policies and procedures relating to budgeting and purchasing. Ability to effectively plan, execute and evaluate a variety of programs and activities. Ability to understand and work with different age groups and to assess needs and interests of potential program participants. Ability to effectively present information and instruction to adults. Ability to effectively plan, coordinate and supervise the work of volunteers. Ability to express ideas and communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with senior citizens, state and local agencies, citizens, employees and the general public. Special interest in the needs and desires of the senior citizens in the community. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in recreation administration, human services, or a related field and experience in recreational programming or administering programs for senior adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
