Agency Adult Correction Division General Counsel Job Classification Title Program Coordinator I (S) Position Number 60056221 Grade NC08 About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work The Sentence Auditor supports offender intake and population management by reviewing, interpreting, and entering sentencing information for new or readmitted offenders into the Offender Population Management System (OPUS). The role analyzes judgment documents to ensure sentence elements align with applicable North Carolina General Statutes, verifies and applies court awarded jail credit, and resolves discrepancies by coordinating with judicial officials to obtain accurate documentation, enabling precise sentence calculation and projected release dates.
Key Duties Include:
- Reviewing and interpreting judgment and commitment documents for new or readmitted offenders.
- Entering sentencing information and related data elements into OPUS with accuracy and completeness.
- Verifying sentence structure, crime class, punishment type, and statutory alignment based on the date of offense.
- Reviewing and applying court awarded jail credit to support accurate sentence calculations.
- Identifying and resolving sentencing discrepancies by communicating with courts and obtaining amended documentation.
- Assessing complex sentencing issues and determining appropriate actions to ensure accurate certification.
- Prioritizing workload and managing multiple cases in a high volume operational environment.
- Troubleshooting data, documentation, or calculation concerns as they arise.
- Ability to research, interpret, understand and apply the North Carolina General Statutes, NCDAC policies and procedures, and court documents to the calculation of sentences and projected release dates
- Considerable knowledge of correctional operations, court processes, the North Carolina General Statutes and NCDAC policies and procedures
- Extensive knowledge and experience using OPUS (Offender Population Unified System)
- Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to manage a heavy workload and to prioritize and resolve emergent and evolving issues
