Director of Alternative Education & Student Re-Engagement Position Summary TheDirector of Alternative Education & Student Re-Engagement (Principal on Special Assignment) serves as the district's lead administrator responsible for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of alternative education pathways and student re-engagement systems. This role ensures that alternative education is not a separate or isolated system, but a strategic intervention designed to re-engage students, accelerate credit attainment, and support successful transitions to graduation and postsecondary pathways. The Director leads a comprehensive system that integrates: Credit recovery and accelerated learning Re-engagement and dropout recovery Behavioral and restorative programming Flexible and non-traditional learning models This position is accountable for ensuring that all alternative pathways are: Rigorous and aligned to graduation requirements Focused on attendance and engagement Data-driven and outcomes-based Certification Requirements (NJDOE-Aligned)Required:
Valid New Jersey Principal Certificate or School Administrator Certificate Master's Degree from an accredited college or university Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status A valid driver's license or state issued ID, valid insurance and registration Preferred /Additional Qualifications:
Supervisor Certificate Additional training in alternative education, behavior systems, or student support Qualifications Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience Minimum three (3) years of administrative or supervisory experience Demonstrated experience in: Alternative education or re-engagement programs Student support systems and interventions Program development and implementation Strong knowledge of: Graduation requirements and credit systems Attendance and engagement strategies MTSS and student support frameworks Core Responsibilities Alternative Education System Leadership (OWNER) Lead the design and implementation of a districtwide alternative education system. Oversee all alternative education programs, including: Credit recovery and accelerated learning Blended and online learning environments Re-engagement and dropout recovery programs Behavioral and restorative programs Ensure programs are rigorous and aligned to district instructional expectations Establish clear entry, progress monitoring, and exit criteria Student Re-Engagement & Dropout Recovery (OWNER) Lead districtwide efforts to re-engage disconnected students. Identify and track students who are: Chronically absent Off-track for graduation Disengaged or withdrawn Develop targeted re-engagement strategies Coordinate outreach and re-entry processes Credit Attainment & Graduation Pathways (OWNER) Ensure students progress toward graduation. Monitor credit accumulation and on-track indicators Ensure access to flexible pathways for credit recovery Align programs with graduation requirements and postsecondary readiness Attendance & Engagement Alignment (OWNER) Ensure alternative education supports attendance improvement. Align programs with district attendance strategies Monitor attendance trends within alternative programs Implement interventions to improve engagement Integration with Student Support Systems (OWNER) Ensure alternative education is aligned with broader support systems.Coordinate with:
MTSS & Intervention Counseling & Student Services School Culture & Behavior Systems Ensure students receive comprehensive academic and social-emotional support Juvenile Justice & External Program Coordination (OWNER) Serve as liaison for external educational placements.Coordinate with:
Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC) Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) Ensure continuity of instruction, credit attainment, and transition planning Support successful reintegration into district programs Data Monitoring & Accountability (OWNER) Ensure programs are driven by data and aligned to outcomes.Monitor key indicators:
Attendance Credit accumulation Graduation progress Re-engagement rates Align data to School Stat processes Adjust programs based on performance School Support & Leadership Coordination (OWNER) Support schools in utilizing alternative pathways effectively. Work with principals and Executive Directors Ensure appropriate student placement and transitions Provide guidance on intervention strategies Staff Supervision & Capacity Building (OWNER) Lead and develop alternative education staff. Supervise program staff and educators Provide coaching and professional development Ensure consistent implementation across programs Family & Community Engagement (OWNER) Ensure strong engagement with families and partners. Support family communication and outreach Coordinate with Family & Community Engagement Department Build partnerships with community organizations Budget & Resource Alignment (OWNER) Ensure resources are aligned to program effectiveness. Manage program budgets Allocate staffing and materials Identify external funding opportunities Continuous Improvement & Innovation (OWNER) Improve alternative education systems over time. Identify gaps and barriers Implement innovative models and strategies Ensure programs remain responsive to student needs Other Duties Perform such other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee in accordance with law and regulation. $106,502.00Maximum Starting Salary:
$204,761.00 Residency Requirement Under New Jersey's "New Jersey First Act" (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7), all employees of New Jersey public school districts must maintain bona fide New Jersey residency as a condition of employment. Candidates must already reside in New Jersey or establish residency within the required timeframe after hire. Current employees who were hired on or before September 1, 2011 are exempt from this requirement and may continue to reside outside the state.
