Job Description:
SUNY Schenectady County Community College's Liberty Partnership Program (LPP) is hiring Peer Leaders for their summer program. Reporting to the LPP Administrator, the Peer Leader will assist LPP staff with the academic and social and emotional components of Liberty Partnerships Program by providing academic and mentoring support to LPP high school and middle school students in the LPP summer program. Peer Leaders will be matched with LPP participants either one on one, or in a small group setting during our summer Work Readiness Program. The purpose of the Peer Leader is to form caring, friendly relationships so that the LPP participants have a strong, positive peer role model who will help them create new opportunities for themselves and experience new measured successes, academically, emotionally, and socially. This is a student internship opportunity for previous graduates of the Liberty Partnerships Program
Responsibilities:
Attend mandatory pre-service training provided by LPP program staff. Report to your assigned site(s) on time ready to work. Support LPP staff in facilitating activities, workshops, field trips, and all aspects of LPP programs. Assist LPP participants with schoolwork, planned activities, and/or supplemental work as assigned by LPP staff. When tutoring, encourage learner/tutee independence and responsibility by having them attempt to complete the work before helping, and by having the learner/tutee practice new skills to gain proficiency. Participate in evaluative efforts of the LPP program to help improve the quality of the program through completing feedback forms and attending team meetings. Understand and ad to all program, agency and institution policies and strictly uphold issues of confidentiality within your relationships, with concern and regard to the physical safety and well-being of the youth mentee/tutee. This includes reporting suspicion of any form of child abuse to LPP staff immediately.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of Liberty Partnerships Program. Clear understanding of the Liberty Partnerships Program mission. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Friendly and approachable. Punctual and professional. Ability to adapt mentoring/tutoring strategies to respond appropriately to different mentees/tutees. Have a positive attitude. Have the desire and ability to form relationships with LPP participants. Have the willingness to be sensitive and responsive to cultural differences, beliefs, and lifestyles of client population.
Special Information:
This is a temporary part-time position beginning on July 6, 2026, and ending on August 20, 2026. Peer Leaders will work Monday through Thursday from 8:30am - 2:00pm, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, with one extended day per week for field trips. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position Offers of employment will be conditional based on the successful completion of a background check and verification of official high school/GED transcripts.
