PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Centro Cultural is seeking a summer STEAM mentor who is committed to supporting and guiding our youth in the classroom. The mentor will work with an assigned group of youth, assisting the Summer STEAM Instructors with daily activities and helping youth develop and reach positive academic and personal goals. They will build positive relationships with youth, serve as a positive role model, help youth develop Social Emotional Learning skills, and empower youth to set and achieve positive goals, resolve issues, and develop coping strategies for the future. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Clear communication with students, parents, and program staff Assist instructors with daily activities, including set up and classroom clean up duties Chaperone students (ex. the classroom, recess, and field trips) Serve as a positive role model and build a trusting relationship with youth by participating in activities together Help youth increase their confidence and motivation by acknowledging their strengths and encouraging them to set and achieve goals Empower youth to develop coping strategies and resolve current issues Provide a healthy, trusting relationship through clear communication and setting appropriate boundaries Actively listen and offer support and encouragement when appropriate Encourage and help students develop Social Emotional Learning skills Perform other duties as assigned. Understanding of Washington County low income, Latino community and other communities of color, and ability to convey program goals and activities to students and families At least 21 years old Previous experience working with youth in an educational or mentoring setting Ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, and program staff Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships with youth Knowledge of child development and experience working with diverse populations Experience with program planning and implementation Passion for working with youth and promoting their personal growth and development Ability to use computer programs and digital learning platforms, including Google Workspace applications such as Google Slides, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. Bilingual English-Spanish preferred. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required Complete and pass a Background Check Possess current driver's license and auto insurance coverage Ability to travel out of town to attend workshops or trainings Must be able to lift at least 35lbs PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is approximately 90% in a classroom and educational program environment and 10% in community locations for field trips, outdoor recreation, and enrichment activities. Classroom working conditions are standard for an educational environment. Community locations may include parks, museums, community centers, libraries, and other field trip destinations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will: Engage in regular communication with students, families, and staff in person and through electronic means Routinely use laptops, tablets, projectors, and other classroom technology, including digital screens Oversee and actively engage with elementary and middle school students in classroom, outdoor, and community based settings Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout classrooms and activity spaces for extended periods of time Assist with classroom setup, educational materials, student supplies, and activity equipment weighing up to 35 pounds Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach, and participate in recreational or hands on STEAM activities Maintain awareness and responsiveness in active youth environments, including during transitions, recess, and field trips Centro Cultural is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
