About the Internship The City of Hillsboro is seeking a Summer Programs Intern to support environmental education and recreation programming at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve (JBWP) . This internship offers hands-on experience assisting with nature-based programs, camps, and community outreach events that connect people of all ages with the outdoors. The selected intern will work alongside Nature Educators to support youth programming, prepare materials and activities, and help deliver engaging educational experiences for the community. Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is part of the City's Parks & Recreation Department, which provides recreational, educational, and enrichment opportunities that promote community well-being, lifelong learning, and environmental stewardship. During the busy summer season, interns play an important role in helping programs run smoothly while gaining valuable experience in youth engagement, recreation programming, and public service. For more detailed information about the duties, responsibilities, and minimum qualifications associated with this role, please review the official job classification: Intern What You'll Be Doing This Summer Support camps, workshops, outreach events, and environmental education programs Assist with the Tiny Tadpoles early childhood education program Assist with the Young Scientist Club youth program for ages 6-10 Participate in outreach programs across the community through Wetlands on Wheels Prepare and organize materials and supplies for programs and activities Help set up activities, welcome participants, and assist throughout the day's programming Support Nature Educators during program delivery Assist with cleanup and preparation for upcoming programs Help troubleshoot issues and adapt as activities and schedules change Programs may occur onsite at Jackson Bottom or at parks and community locations throughout Hillsboro, and activities take place rain or shine. The Ideal Candidate Enjoys working with children and engaging with the public Has an interest in environmental education, recreation programming, or community outreach Demonstrates strong customer service and communication skills Is creative, patient, and adaptable in a dynamic program environment Is organized, reliable, and consistently punctual Can adjust to changing needs and assist with problem-solving Has basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Previous experience working with children is helpful. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus, but not required. Students from any educational level or field of study are welcome to apply , though interest or experience related to recreation, education, environmental studies, or community programs may be beneficial. Learning Opportunity This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in: Youth program facilitation and public engagement Camp and classroom-style activity management Customer service and communication in a public recreation setting Program preparation, event setup, and logistical coordination Problem-solving and adapting to changing program needs Organizational skills and behind-the-scenes program planning Understanding how environmental education and recreation programs are developed and delivered within a city department Interns will also gain insight into the day-to-day operations of Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve and how staff coordinate programs that connect the community with nature. Minimum Qualifications Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary), or have graduated within the last three months Licensing/Certifications Valid Driver's License and safe driving record required. Internship Classification Summary The principal function of this class is to provide a learning opportunity to students interested in working in a public service field. This position can include analytical and administrative services in support of department and city-wide programs and projects related to a student's area of study. Incumbents, as assigned by position and supervisor may be responsible for performing project research and recommendations; preparing information and/or supporting documents for meetings or projects; maintaining databases; providing technical assistance; participating in community outreach; and facilitating internal and/or external customer service. This position will perform work under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor.
