  • Full-time Project First Step, an EHCA (Erie Homes for Children and Adults) program, supports families who are often economically challenged, in need of parenting education, may have drug and alcohol addictions, may be intellectually challenged or lack the resources to provide a safe environment for their children.
The Family Specialist:
Nurturing Parenting® Program (NPP) Facilitator maintains a caseload to provide comprehensive, family-centered support to families where one or more family members have a risk factor. This person uses assessment and measurement tools for program planning. 37 1/2 hours per week (full-time) Mainly day shift, with some evening hours as needed. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required for this position. Family Specialist Nurturing Parenting Program Facilitator responsibilities: Maintains a caseload and provides comprehensive services to families in varying levels of need. Attends appointments and meetings with or on behalf of the program participant in a variety of settings. Networks with local social service agencies and referring agencies. Completes routine documentation as it pertains to program participants. Prepares monthly reports. Maintains ongoing staff training and certifications as required. Prepares Family Action/Case Plans for each participant. Work with the Erie County Office of Children and Youth when needed. Utilizes program curriculum and training materials for childbirth and parenting when applicable. Supports families in obtaining necessary home and community services. Guides families in identifying skills and implementing goals for safe, healthy parenting. Supports parents with disabilities, mental health, or substance concerns in skill and goal development for safe, healthy parenting. Records observations. Summarize data. Write progress notes after each home visit, call, or other client contact. Attends some required medical and community appointments to support program participants' healthy lives and homes. Utilizes the Project First Step database for documentation and to track units of service for each family served. Attends home visits and participates as a team member. Prepares court summaries and testifies at court hearings as required. Provides input and assists in planning and guiding the families in social, recreational, employment, and other activities. Maintains good working relationships with other social service agencies. Provides transportation for the client to appointments or services set by the Family Specialist. Helps the client gain independence with transportation. Completes Nurturing Parenting® Program Implementation Objectives, including AAPI-2 and the NSCS assessments. Utilizes the Nurturing Parenting Guidelines for Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers. Provides education and activities to help families understand child development and care. Utilizes the Nurturing Parenting® Guidelines for School-Age Children 5 to 11 Years. Completes the Family Nurturing Journal (FNJ) to monitor their progress in learning the program competencies. Completes Family Nurturing Plans (FNPs) to document progress. The Parent Educators (Family Specialists) use these to measure improvement chapter by chapter. Documents progress in case notes sent monthly to OCY caseworker and supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned.

Demonstrates ability to provide direct service to individuals and families. Experience with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and drug and alcohol addiction and recovery is preferred. Knowledge of the Erie County Office of Children and Youth and the family court system is preferred. Knowledge of or experience with a variety of social services agencies and supports in Erie and surrounding counties is preferred. Ability to travel within Erie and surrounding counties. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. Complete Nurturing Parenting® Program Facilitator Training. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Complete all in-service training hours and clearances per agency regulations and policy, as they pertain to this position. Complete and maintain Mandated Reporter training. 37 1/2 hours per week (full-time) Mainly day shift, with some evening hours as needed. There is no remote option for this position.
