This role oversees the day-to-day programming of our overnight summer camp, including specialty staff training, daily activities, and all-camp evening programs. The Program Director is responsible for overseeing all program areas, ensuring excellence in camper experience, staff performance, safety, and compliance. This includes evaluating program success and engagement, designing and facilitating programs and programmatic staff training, supporting creativity and innovation across program areas, and maintaining compliance with American Camp Association (ACA) and LA County Department of Public Health (DPH) standards. This is a year-round, in-person position based in Glendale, CA, with required on-site residency during summer camp and all retreat weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Oversight & Evaluation Evaluate all camp programs for quality, camper engagement, overall success and implement systems to track program effectiveness and identify areas for growth Observe and assess teaching staff performance, providing ongoing feedback and coaching to support engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate activities Staff Training & Development Design, coordinate, and facilitate comprehensive pre-camp and in-season staff training Provide ongoing coaching and support to program staff throughout the summer Identify and bring in external experts to enhance staff training and development Foster a culture of continuous learning, creativity, and excellence among program staff Compliance & Safety Maintain all program-related compliance documentation in alignment with American Camp Association (ACA) standards and LA County Department of Public Health (DPH) requirements Stay current on trends, regulations, and best practices in youth programming and camp operations Ensure all program areas operate safely and in accordance with established guidelines Specialty Program Leadership Train to become a certified USA Archery instructor/trainer, train as an ACCT level 1 instructor, level 2 within two years Create, facilitate, and steward camp programs including all retreat programs, and fill in as needed in program areas during the summer Coordinate specialty certifications and trainings (e.g., ropes course, lifeguarding) in partnership with the Vice President of Camp and Retreat Operations Ensure all specialty areas are properly staffed, certified, and operating safely Program Operations & Logistics Coordinate with outside program vendors (horse ranch, ranch animals) Maintain inventory of all program supplies and equipment Oversee the organization, upkeep, and year-round maintenance of all program areas Steward program budgets responsibly, ensuring thoughtful use of resources Create the full camp program schedule, ensuring daily activities, specialty rotations, and all-camp experiences are thoughtfully designed, well-paced, and aligned with camper needs Staffing & Hiring Support recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of summer programmatic staff Coordinate staffing plans for retreat weekends, including confirming appropriate coverage Ensure program areas are adequately staffed and aligned with program needs Camp Culture & Community Experience Lead and oversee evening programs, all-camp activities, and special events Facilitate campfires and other signature community-building experiences Partner with the Vice President of Camp and Retreat Operations to implement and elevate Camp Bob Waldorf's program vision and mission Model and reinforce camp values of community, inclusion, identity, and respect Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred, with 2-3+ years of experience in camp programming, youth development, outdoor education, or a related field Demonstrated experience leading, supervising, training, and coaching staff in a youth-focused environment Experience working with diverse and low-income populations, with an understanding of and respect for different backgrounds, traditions, and cultures Strong organizational and operational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and systems effectively Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with strengths in teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, including crisis management Ability to design and lead engaging programs and facilitate large group experiences that build positive camp culture Knowledge of American Camp Association (ACA) standards and public health compliance requirements Certification (or willingness to obtain certification) in USA Archery, ACCT, and other relevant program areasCOMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
