Job Description

Position Summary:
The South Carolina State Museum Public Programs Internship will provide professional development and educational opportunities for a qualified student. It is designed to encourage creative thinking and help develop practical skills. In particular, this internship will support the planning and implementation of a new programming series, four foodways programs, funded by the SC250 Commission.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
Assisting with administration tasks. Assisting Public Programs Team with site visits. Assisting with panelists and vendor coordination Providing general program support Assisting with program implementation. Conducting research and collecting data. Assisting with community engagement programs. Completing assigned tasks within project timelines. Collaborating with other team members. Performing other duties as assigned.
Learning Objectives May Include:
An understanding of the South Carolina State Museum's mission and its impact on South Carolinians. An understanding of the objectives and goals of community engagement efforts at SCSM. Professional communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking related to conducting research, program planning, cross-departmental coordination, and program execution. Experience working with museums, historical societies, a variety of cultural organizations and institutions, food industry professionals, and media agencies, among other individuals and groups. Career development through networking.
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled or pursuing a collegiate degree in history, public history, historic preservation, hospitality, tourism, or other related field or discipline. Must be 18 years of age or older.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong organizational, research, and communication skills. Ability to work some nights and weekends. Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with a variety of stakeholders. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Must pass a background check in accordance with state policies. Must have reliable transportation.
Performance Assessment & Program Evaluation:
To ensure a meaningful internship experience and evaluate program effectiveness, SCSM will develop learning objectives and evaluation standards with the successful intern. Interns will receive regular feedback, participate in check-ins, and complete a final evaluation to assess progress and skill development.
