Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to make a direct, positive impact on students and community members as they navigate the path to higher education and workforce readiness. As an advisor in the First Gen Center at Utah Valley University, you will provide guidance on admissions, enrollment, and financial aid while helping individuals understand their options and take meaningful steps toward their educational or vocational goals. The position blends student support with outreach, allowing you to work closely with university partners, local school districts, and community organizations to expand access and awareness. You will work as part of a dedicated First Gen team to create events and initiatives that build connection and belonging within the center, across campus, and beyond. This position offers the chance to contribute to UVU's mission of access, inclusion, and student success while building strong professional relationships and supporting individuals at pivotal moments in their educational journey. Works closely with First Gen leadership, advising and supporting students, including but not limited to first-generation, low-income, adult learners, and others in group settings, removing barriers and obstacles related to postsecondary education and training applications, enrollments, FAFSA, etc. Collaborates with UVU and community partners to promote and educate students and community members on opportunities for first-generation, low-income, adult learners, and other non-traditional students. Participates in events and delivers presentations when applicable. Assists with community-building events, workshops, and activities within the First Gen Center and across campus. Other duties as assigned. Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree related to the Summary of Duties; OR any combination of education and/or experience totaling four years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in student support programs in higher education or educational non-profit work. Knowledge Knowledge of university policies and procedures. Knowledge of first-generation college students' life experiences and challenges. Knowledge of UVU and community resources Knowledge of education preparation programs, funding resources, and services, specifically financial aid and scholarships. Knowledge and experience in working with high school youth and adult learners entering educational institutions. Knowledge and literacy of Microsoft Office programs. Skills Skills in helping individuals identify barriers, remove obstacles, and promote hope. Skills in problem-solving, decision-making, networking, and excellent interpersonal communication. Skills in the use of computers and computer software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and databases. Skills in preparation of presentations, charts, graphs, etc. Skills in preparation of financial aid applications. Skills in reviewing and editing documents. Abilities Ability to maintain highly confidential information. Ability to perform a variety of duties with minimum supervision. Ability to follow verbal and written procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to create organizational systems for data collection and management. Ability to seek out and receive feedback effectively from students and staff alike. Ability to work as part of a team.
