  • Part-time Position Overview The After School Program Coordinator is responsible for designing, launching, and leading a welcoming and engaging after school program for school-aged children (ages 5-12).
The program runs on school days from 2:30-5:30 PM, providing children with a safe, joyful, and enriching place to land after the school day. This role requires creativity, flexibility, and initiative. The Coordinator will build the program from the ground up—developing routines, activities, and culture—while working directly with children and collaborating with an After School Assistant. Typical daily hours are 1:45-5:45 PM, with built in hours for planning, set up, and community outreach. Key Responsibilities Program Design & Implementation Design and implement a developmentally appropriate, engaging after school program for children ages 5-12 Create a predictable yet flexible daily structure that balances relaxation, play, creativity, and movement Plan and lead a variety of activities, which may include: Snack and community time Homework support or quiet work time Outdoor play, forest exploration, or sensory garden activities Indoor games, art, building, and imaginative play Foster a warm, inclusive, and joyful environment where children feel safe, known, and valued Daily Operations & Supervision Supervise children during all program activities, ensuring safety and positive behavior guidance Work collaboratively with an After School Assistant to support smooth daily operations Maintain appropriate supervision, attendance records, and transitions from school dismissal to program start Set up and clean up program spaces and materials daily Relationship Building & Communication Build positive, respectful relationships with children and families Communicate clearly with families about daily activities, expectations, and program culture Collaborate with school staff and program leadership as needed Outreach & Program Growth Assist with outreach to local schools and families to promote and grow the after school program Help communicate the program's philosophy, schedule, and offerings to prospective families Contribute ideas for program expansion, enrichment opportunities, or seasonal offerings Health, Safety & Compliance Follow all program policies and applicable Vermont Child Care Licensing Regulations for school-age programs Maintain safe indoor and outdoor environments Follow health, safety, and emergency procedures
Qualifications Required:
At least a Vermont Early Childhood Career Ladder Level 3 certificate OR equivalent education, or An associate degree (or college coursework) in a related field (education, child development, etc.) with experience working with children Experience working with school-aged children (ages 5-12) Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a small program independently Ability to work daily from 1:45-5:45 PM on school days Comfort working both indoors and outdoors in varied weather Willingness to build a new program and adapt as it grows
Preferred:
Coursework or training in education, child development, recreation, or a related field Experience designing or leading enrichment, after school, camp, or youth programs Interest in nature-based, play-based, or experiential learning Desired Attributes Warm, energetic, and approachable Creative and resourceful Comfortable with flexibility and problem-solving Strong communicator and collaborator Enjoys working with a wide age range of children
