Full-time Responsible For:
Oversees all aspects of selecting and caring for horses, assisting the Program Director in maintaining barn facilities relationships. Help to maintain a volunteer crew to assist with schooling and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all participants, staff, and horses.
HORSE CARE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees Identify, evaluate, and acquire potential horses appropriate for program use.
  • Maintain herd health and training, including coordination of staff and volunteers to execute preventative health, evaluation, schooling program, record keeping, and all horse emergencies.
  • Act as the main point of contact for horse owners and facility owners for horse-related concerns.
  • Set and manage horse owner expectations and ensure trial agreements, care lease agreements, and necessary insurance paperwork are accurate and up to date for all horses.
  • Coordinate veterinarian, farrier and other horse care services throughout the year.
  • Help maintain, organize and schedule the schooling program for all program horses along with the program staff.
  • Oversee staff and volunteer feed team, secure feed, and set up feed schedules throughout the year.
  • Coordinate any travel for the horses (intake, discharge, evacuation, etc.) as needed.
  • Implement and adhere to all facility requirements for horse care as agreed upon by Free Rein.
  • Maintain accurate records for each program horse and maintain daily/weekly/monthly/annual reports as deemed necessary by the Program Director.
  • Work with program staff to assign horses and appropriate tack to riders, ensuring weekly horse use is reasonable and sustainable in consultation with the Program Director.
  • Implement and adhere to all PATH International standards.
  • Assist program staff in training all volunteers and staff on safety procedures as they relate to horses.
  • Complete an evaluation of the current year and make recommendations for equipment supplies and stable supplies for the following year.
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and manage the approved horse care budget.
  • Attend staff meetings and perform any other duties deemed necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
  • Knowledge of horses and be able to develop and maintain a process for selecting horses appropriate for participant use in the therapeutic riding program.
  • At least 18 years of age. Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with staff, riders, caregivers, and volunteers.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other health hazards related to a horse barn.
  • Barn management experience with eight horses or more preferred.
  • Physical ability to perform all duties and responsibilities related to the horse barn, including but not limited to repetitive lifting of hay bales.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
