LOCATION
Romney, West Virginia This position assists program staff in supporting Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Visually Impaired young adults enrolled in the Career Academy for Postgraduates (CAP), a postsecondary transition program focused on employment, post-secondary education, and independent living skill development. The aide supports students individually and in small groups under the direction of the Transition Coordinator. Responsibilities may include instructional reinforcement, transportation, community-based support, and assistance with daily program operations. This position differs from a traditional Kâ€"12 aide role in that it supports adult learners in real-world, community-based, and residential settings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with preparation, setup, delivery, and cleanup of instructional materials and activities, with consideration for accessibility needs. Supports program staff and contracted providers in implementing instruction and activities aligned with program goals and individualized plans across on-campus, residential, and community-based settings. Works directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce skills taught by program staff, including employment readiness, independent living skills, time management and organization, and social and communication skills. Maintains an environment that is safe, respectful, and conducive to learning and independence, while establishing positive rapport with adult learners and promoting appropriate boundaries, responsibility, and self-advocacy. Reinforces workplace expectations, safety procedures, and professional behavior through job skills development, training activities, and on-site coaching, as directed by program staff. Assists with maintaining student records, communication logs, and other relevant documentation aligned with program standards, including employer surveys, forms, and routine communication. Supports organization and coordination of program schedules, including meetings, appointments, transportation, and activities. Provides transportation for program students to approved program activities and transportation requests, as assigned. Maintains regular attendance and complies with state laws and WVSDB policies. Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates unquestionable integrity. Promotes positive student, staff, and community relations. Attends required in-services, trainings, and staff meetings as directed. Maintains positive work habits and performs duties efficiently and productively. Adheres to the WVSDB Employee Code of Conduct. Performs other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s).
QUALIFICATIONS
Aide IIâ€" A person who holds a high school diploma or has received a general educational development certificate and has completed a training program approved by the State Board of Education. Aide III â€"A person who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and has completed six semester hours of college credit at a higher educational institution OR is employed as an aide in a special education program and has one year's experience as an aide in special education. Aide IVâ€" A person who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and has completed 18 hours of State Board approved college credits at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. The successful completion of an in-service training course determined by the State Board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credits may be counted as part of the required 18 hours.

Must complete required training for clearance to operate state vehicles to transport program participants. Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required. and Must successfully pass criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which effect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.
EXPECTATIONS
The staff member must meet ASL skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification. The staff member must complete all required annual trainings and participate in staff meetings as scheduled. The staff member must dress appropriately and adhere to safety standards for the position. The staff member works effectively as a member of the educational team. The staff member demonstrates self-control and exhibits an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance. The staff member demonstrates ethical conduct and good work habits such as punctuality and attendance. The staff member demonstrates self-direction and the ability to use software applications for work productivity and collaboration. The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines. The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies. The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.
COMPENSATION
Based on WVSDB Service Personnel Pay Schedule (B, C, or D Scale) dependent upon experience and education level. Ten months (200 day) annual employment. Specific assignments are based upon student needs, enrollment, and departmental needs. Additional compensation is available for ASL proficiency as detailed in the WVSDB Communication Policy.
