Job Title:
Assistant Project Manager Job Description The Assistant Project Manager supports the Project Manager in executing industrial mechanical construction projects, including large-bore piping systems, central utility plants, chilled and condenser water systems, steam and hydronic systems, process piping, and heavy HVAC installations. This role focuses on industrial and plant environments, such as manufacturing facilities, energy plants, data centers, process facilities, and institutional central plants. The APM plays a critical role in cost control, procurement, fabrication coordination, subcontract management, and schedule execution to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Responsibilities Assist in managing industrial mechanical projects from preconstruction through commissioning and closeout. Support development and maintenance of detailed CPM schedules. Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and contract documentation. Maintain accurate project logs and reporting systems. Coordinate and document owner, engineer, and subcontractor meetings. Assist with job cost tracking, forecasting, and budget management. Support preparation of monthly cost reports and productivity tracking. Review vendor and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and compliance. Assist in pricing and negotiating change orders. Monitor labor, equipment, and material productivity. Issue and track purchase orders for pipe, fittings, valves, equipment, and specialty materials. Coordinate with fabrication shops on spool drawings, production schedules, and subcontract buyout and scope alignment. Track long-lead equipment and manage delivery timelines. Work closely with superintendents and field leadership on daily coordination. Participate in jobsite walks and production planning meetings. Assist in resolving field conflicts, drawing discrepancies, and coordination issues. Support quality control documentation, pressure testing, and commissioning processes. Coordinate with BIM/VDC teams for clash detection and model updates. Essential Skills 0-4 years of experience in construction, mechanical construction, or industrial projects. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related field preferred. Basic understanding of industrial piping systems, HVAC systems, or process mechanical work. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, isometrics, and specifications. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and project management software. Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Relevant field experience in industrial mechanical construction may substitute for degree. Understanding of construction documents and construction process. Degree in Engineering, Building Science, or Construction preferred. Work Environment Work is primarily on-site at project locations, requiring travel at least 50% of the time. A per diem of $125/day is provided. At times, the APM will work industrial outages, which may involve a 7-day, 12-hour-a-day schedule. Typical work hours are 7 am to 5 pm, whether on a project site or at the office. This role emphasizes employee ownership, offering full benefits and opportunities for long-term career growth. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tuscaloosa, AL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.
