We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Project Engineering Manager to lead and oversee our Project Engineering Department within a growing commercial painting subcontracting company. This leadership role is responsible for managing project engineer workload, improving operational coordination, supporting project execution, and ensuring strong communication between departments, project teams, and field operations. This position plays a critical role in keeping projects organized, teams aligned, and operations running efficiently across multiple commercial construction projects. The Project Engineering Manager will supervise and develop the Project Engineer team while serving as a central coordination point between Operations, Project Management, Estimating, Field Supervision, Purchasing, Safety, and Accounting. Manage staffing, onboarding, training, and performance expectations. Establish department procedures, standards, and accountability measures. Conduct regular team meetings and performance evaluations. Manage and balance project engineer workloads across active projects. Assign team members based on project size, schedule demands, and complexity. Coordinate staffing adjustments to support operational needs. Identify workflow bottlenecks and implement process improvements. Project & Operations Support Oversee project engineering support from project startup through closeout.
Ensure timely completion of:
Submittals RFIs Change order tracking Material coordination Document control Closeout packages Support project managers and field teams with operational coordination. Assist with project startup meetings, scheduling coordination, and turnover processes. Cross-Department Coordination Facilitate communication between office staff, field teams, and leadership. Coordinate with estimating, operations, accounting, purchasing, and safety departments. Help maintain alignment between project schedules, manpower planning, and operational priorities. Process Improvement Develop and improve department workflows, templates, and systems. Support implementation and optimization of construction management software. Track department performance metrics and operational efficiency. Identify opportunities to improve consistency, communication, and execution. What You Bring to the Table 5+ years of experience in commercial construction operations, project engineering, or project management support. Prior supervisory or leadership experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management software — plus the tech skills to learn new tools quickly Familiarity with Bluebeam, Smartsheet, ProEst, Autodesk Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. Strong problem-solving and leadership abilities.Bonus points but not required:
