Cost Controller - Capital Projects Role Overview The Cost Controller supports capital projects by managing project budgets, forecasts, and cost reporting from early planning through construction and closeout. This role ensures project costs are accurate, transparent, and aligned with approved scope, schedule, and funding. You will work closely with project managers, engineering, procurement, construction, and finance teams to help leaders make informed financial decisions. Key Responsibilities Project Cost Management Set up and maintain project cost structures (WBS) that link scope, schedule, and budget Establish and manage project cost baselines, including direct costs, indirect costs, contingency, and reserves Ensure costs are properly classified (CAPEX/OPEX, direct/indirect, labor, materials, etc.) Forecasting & Reporting Prepare monthly cost forecasts, including Estimate at Completion (EAC) and Estimate to Complete (ETC) Track actual, committed, and accrued costs against the approved budget Identify cost variances, trends, and risks and clearly explain them in reports and dashboards Support cost reviews, gate reviews, and management presentations Change & Trend Management Support the project change management process by evaluating cost impacts of scope and design changes Maintain a trend and change log to identify potential cost impacts early Ensure approved changes are properly reflected in budgets, forecasts, and systems Systems & Controls Perform cost control activities in SAP Project Systems (or similar ERP tools) Ensure purchase orders, invoices, and accruals are coded correctly Support month‑end and quarter‑end close activities and cost reconciliations Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Partner with project managers, engineers, procurement, scheduling, and finance teams Contribute to risk and contingency planning activities Help mentor junior cost staff and support continuous improvement of cost control processes Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Finance, Accounting, or related field or 3+ years of experience in cost control or project controls on capital projects Strong understanding of project budgets, forecasting, and cost reporting Experience with SAP Project Systems or similar cost management systems Advanced Excel skills Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills Preferred Qualifications Experience with stage‑gate or phased project delivery models Familiarity with earned value management (EVM) concepts Experience using trend or forecasting tools PMP, AACE, or similar professional certification Experience on large industrial, manufacturing, or infrastructure projects Why This Role Matters This role helps ensure project spending is well controlled, risks are identified early, and leaders have reliable cost information to make decisions.
