Job Title:
Project Manager Job Description The Project Manager diligently leads utility-related projects to completion within defined scope, budget, and schedule while maintaining a thorough understanding of project risks and financial performance. This role manages the overall client relationship, addressing technical, financial, and logistical issues as they arise, and evolves into a dual "seller/doer" position by both developing new work and delivering successful projects. The Project Manager plays a key role in identifying target market opportunities, developing marketing plans, and ensuring clear, consistent communication with clients, internal management, and project teams. Responsibilities Lead projects from initiation through completion, ensuring delivery within approved scope, budget, and schedule. Manage the overall client relationship, including technical, financial, and logistical aspects, and serve as the primary point of contact throughout the project lifecycle. Develop and grow business with specific clients, taking on a dual role that combines selling new work with executing existing projects. Identify target market areas and contribute to the development and implementation of marketing plans. Provide clear and timely communication of project updates to clients, internal management, and project team members. Prepare for and attend monthly project review meetings with operations to report on progress, risks, and financial performance. Coordinate all project activities among the project owner, architects/engineers (A/E), and contractors to maintain alignment and resolve issues quickly. Participate in the development and implementation of project procedures and policies, including Project Labor Agreements (PLA). Collaborate with architects and engineers to interpret contract documents and manage shop drawing submittals, approvals, and change orders as required. Issue directives to architects, engineers, and contractors to address and resolve issues identified during field visits by design and construction teams. Monitor project schedules and take proactive action to keep the project on track and within approved cost limitations. Make decisions related to project phasing and scheduling and ensure the preparation and maintenance of schedules for planning, design, and construction activities. Intervene promptly when necessary to remove obstacles and ensure timely completion of project work. Review contractor claims or disputed work and provide recommendations to management on appropriate actions. Exercise independent judgment to make on-site change order decisions and negotiate effectively with contractors. Support utility-focused projects, including transmission and substation work, in coordination with an end utility client. Apply scheduling and budgeting expertise to maintain accurate project plans and financial forecasts for utility projects. Essential Skills 2-5 years of experience in utility project management. Experience supporting an end utility in a managerial capacity. Demonstrated project management experience in utility environments, including transmission and substation projects. Proficiency in project scheduling and budgeting for complex utility or electrical projects. Experience in electrical engineering or closely related engineering discipline. Ability to interpret and manage contract documents, including shop drawings, submittals, approvals, and change orders. Experience reviewing contractor claims and disputed work and advising on appropriate resolution. Proven ability to use independent judgment to make on-site change order decisions and negotiate with contractors. Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey updates to clients, management, and project teams. Capability to coordinate effectively with project owners, architects/engineers, and contractors. Experience participating in the development and implementation of project procedures and policies, including Project Labor Agreements (PLA). Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on projects with electric utilities, particularly in transmission and substation environments. Prior experience acting as an owner's or client's representative on utility projects. Exposure to marketing plan development and identification of target market areas. Experience preparing and presenting project status in monthly review meetings with operations or leadership. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to intervene and resolve issues to keep projects on schedule and within budget. Negotiation skills for managing contractor relationships and change orders. Comfort working in a dual role that combines business development (seller) and project delivery (doer). Work Environment The Project Manager works in a hybrid environment supporting a utility client site in Spring Valley, New York. The schedule typically includes working from home on Mondays and Fridays, being in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and a flexible or floating arrangement on Thursdays. The role involves functioning as an on-site representative at a utility facility, collaborating closely with utility staff, architects, engineers, and contractors. Work is performed in both office and field settings, including time at a utility's transmission and substation project locations, where adherence to site safety practices and appropriate professional attire and personal protective equipment is expected. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Albany, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $48.00 - $64.90/hr.
