Job Description

Who We Are Beloved Community Cafe is a soon to open pay-what-you-can community cafe and ministry of Good Samaritan Church. We believe good food, shared tables, and radical hospitality can help heal isolation and build beloved community. Our mission is to create a space where every person — regardless of income, housing status, background, identity, or ability — is treated with dignity and welcomed as a neighbor. At Beloved Community Cafe, some guests pay for meals, some pay what they can, and some volunteer their time in exchange for food. Everyone eats. Everyone belongs. In addition to weekday cafe service, our space will also host community dinners (food provided by Metro Ministries) and a participatory "brunch church" worship gatherings each Sunday. To learn more about us, visit: www.belovedcommunitycafe.org or www.discovergoodsam.org Position Overview We are seeking a Kitchen Manager to oversee the daily functioning of our community cafe kitchen and help cultivate a warm, organized, volunteer-centered environment. This is not simply a back-of-house kitchen position. We are looking for someone who sees food as ministry, hospitality as sacred work, and volunteers as partners in building community.
The ideal candidate is:
Organized and dependable Comfortable leading volunteers with warmth and patience Skilled in food preparation and kitchen coordination Able to maintain strong food safety standards Flexible and collaborative Passionate about community-centered work This role includes both hands-on kitchen work and volunteer management. Responsibilities Kitchen Operations Oversee day-to-day kitchen operations for the cafe and brunch church Prepare and coordinate food for weekly brunch church gatherings Lead volunteer cook days in which meals are prepared for freezing and later service Oversee buffet service during cafe hours (Monday-Thursday, 10am-2pm) Ensure kitchen cleanliness, organization, and efficiency Maintain compliance with food safety and sanitation standards, including Serve Safe practices Monitor food storage, labeling, rotation, and inventory Volunteer Leadership Welcome, train, and lead kitchen volunteers onsite Help create a positive, hospitable, and community-oriented volunteer culture Delegate tasks appropriately and support volunteers with varying skill levels and abilities
Note:
This position is not responsible for volunteer recruitment or scheduling Food Planning & Purchasing Assist in planning simple, nourishing, cost-conscious menus Order ingredients and kitchen supplies Track inventory and minimize food waste Coordinate the use of donated or rescued food when appropriate Collaboration Work collaboratively with church/cafe leadership and volunteers Participate in regular staff check-ins or meetings Help cultivate the overall mission and spirit of Beloved Community Cafe Minimum Qualifications Experience working in a commercial kitchen, community kitchen, restaurant, catering environment, or similar setting Strong organizational and time-management skills Ability to lead and coordinate volunteers Understanding of food safety and sanitation practices Ability to lift kitchen supplies and stand for extended periods Warm, collaborative interpersonal skills Serve Safe Manager certification (or willingness to obtain certification) Preferred Qualifications Experience working with volunteers Experience in nonprofit, ministry, mutual aid, or community-based food settings Experience with large-batch cooking and food storage/freezing systems Comfort working in diverse and inclusive environments Experience managing inventory and food ordering We value diverse backgrounds and experiences and encourage candidates to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification. Schedule & Hours Approximately 25 hours/week including: Cafe service hours (Monday-Thursday, 10am-2pm, Sundays 1-3pm) Weekly cook/prep days (can occur during café hours) Sunday brunch church food preparation (Sundays 9am•noon) Ordering, planning, and administrative coordination Some schedule flexibility may be possible depending on operational needs.
