Description The St. Charles Police Department seeks to hire a competent, dedicated, customer service focused staff who pride themselves on performing their duties to the highest level of excellence. This civilian, uniformed position, under the general direction of the Commander of Special Services, is responsible for enforcement of parking ordinances, animal control, business licensing compliance, accident investigation, report writing, and other non-criminal offenses. Examples of Duties Patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to check various types of premises. Identify and locate owners of vehicles involved in accidents and witnesses; enforce parking laws and ordinances; check vehicles for proper registration. Investigate accidents and property damage; observe crime scenes for evidence and locate witnesses. Recover, inventory, and estimate the value of stolen property. Interact with citizens, comfort emotionally upset people, and as necessary, refer people social service agencies. Conduct surveillance of individuals/locations, search for missing persons. Control, regulate, and direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic using barriers, flares, and hand signals; remove hazards from the roadway. Serve as liaison to courts, other units of law enforcement, special interest groups, and state agencies. Testify in cases or hearings for criminal and civil court cases. Participate in emergency circumstances, such as evacuating people from dangerous areas. Take fingerprints, booking photographs, and perform jail checks. Work occasional weekends, special event details, and holidays. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, associate's degree preferred. One year of experience, prior police experience preferred. Ability to drive a motor vehicle under non-emergency and emergency conditions. Perform duties with initiative, good judgment and resourcefulness. Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to resolve conflicts tactfully and maintain composure in stressful situations, write reports, and speak publicly. Operate a variety of computer systems, software programs, and applications to inquire and perform data entry. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. If selected, successful completion of background investigation (including fingerprinting), physical, functional capacity evaluation and drug screen.
