Job Description
Lead with Purpose. Make a Difference. A respected nonprofit organization serving survivors of domestic violence is seeking an experienced and compassionate Shelter Director to lead the daily operations of a residential shelter program in Monroe County. This leadership role oversees shelter operations, supervises staff, ensures regulatory compliance, supports resident services, and builds strong community partnerships. The ideal candidate is a mission-driven professional with experience in social services, crisis intervention, nonprofit leadership, or shelter management who is passionate about creating a safe and empowering environment for survivors and their children.
What You'll Do:
Shelter Operations Oversee day-to-day shelter operations and ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. Develop and maintain shelter policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Ensure compliance with applicable licensing, grant, and regulatory requirements. Support resident intake processes, crisis response efforts, and service coordination. Monitor facility needs, inventory, and emergency preparedness plans. Leadership & Staff Development Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise shelter staff and volunteers. Create staffing schedules to support continuous shelter coverage. Promote a positive, collaborative, and trauma-informed workplace culture. Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development. Resident Services & Advocacy Ensure residents have access to advocacy, safety planning, referrals, and community resources. Collaborate with schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement, courts, and social service agencies. Support residents with compassion, dignity, and respect while maintaining confidentiality. Assist with crisis situations and resident concerns as needed. Program Administration Maintain accurate records and confidential documentation. Assist with grant reporting, program tracking, and outcome measurement. Support budgeting, purchasing, and operational accountability. Participate in strategic planning and program development initiatives. Community Engagement Serve as a professional representative of the organization within the community. Develop and maintain partnerships with local agencies and stakeholders. Participate in community education, outreach, and awareness efforts. Support fundraising activities and donor engagement initiatives. What We're Looking For Required Qualifications 3+ years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience in social services, nonprofit organizations, crisis intervention, shelter operations, or related settings. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and navigate sensitive situations professionally. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data management systems. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, trauma, sexual assault, homelessness, or crisis situations. Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices. Experience with grants, compliance reporting, and program administration. Bilingual skills are a plus.
