Job Description

Part Time Planning & Zoning Assistant Located in Davisburg, MI, Springfield Charter Township is seeking a Part Time Planning and Zoning Assistant. The Part Time Planning & Zoning Assistant is the first point of contact for requests and inquiries to the Supervisor's Office. In addition, this role is responsible for supporting and administering daily functions within the Planning, Building, and Zoning departments. This position is under the direct supervision of the Supervisor. This role involves assisting property owners with inquiries related to plat maps, property records, appraisals, and the assessment process, while also serving as the initial point of contact for a variety of applications and permit types. Responsibilities include processing, tracking, and coordinating permit and project applications across multiple departments, such as variance appeals, property tax exemptions, and building permits. The position supports incoming phone calls and counter requests, receives and maintains important property documents—including Property Transfer Affidavits, Principal Residence Exemptions, site plans, blueprints, permits, and surveys—and helps prepare public notices and mailings for meetings like the Board of Review, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Special Assessment sessions. Additionally, the role coordinates with the Township Treasurer and Assessor to help prepare and maintain accurate Special Assessment rolls, responds to zoning inquiries regarding permitted uses and ordinance standards, and prepares mapping and aerial imagery for both internal and public requests. Duties also include receiving and processing payments for departments such as Assessing, Building, and Zoning, communicating site visit schedules with residents and contractors, assisting with FOIA request fulfillment, and producing month-end reporting documents. Maintaining a clean and organized workstation and filing system is essential, along with creating reports and compiling property records as requested by the Supervisor. Required Education, Skills, and Abilities for the Part Time Planning & Zoning Assistant Position High School education or equivalent A minimum of four years of experience working in an office environment and/or specialized office training Minimum of one or more years of experience with residential property appraisal, municipal planning, building department, or other related experience Knowledge of the use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Knowledge of specialized software such as BS&A building, BS&A assessing, and ArcGIS is preferred Perform word processing, spreadsheet applications, and database maintenance Operate basic office equipment including computers, fax machine, copy machine, printers, postage machines, multi-line phones Ability to multi-task, work independently and regularly under stress and adapt to changes in work priorities, while remaining detail oriented Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate in a professional manner with a variety of residents, vendors, and contractors Read and interpret both blueprints and site plans Time management, including the assessment of task prioritization Physical Demands for the Part Time Planning & Zoning Assistant Position The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by any member to successfully perform the functions of this job. Compensation for the Part Time Planning & Zoning Assistant Position This is a part-time, hourly position offering a competitive wage commensurate with experience and qualifications.
