JOB SUMMARY
The Public Works Maintenance Specialist performs various tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of City-owned facilities, right-of-way, property, and equipment to ensure a safe, attractive and functional environment for employees and the general public. This position performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Road Maintenance (60%) Performs general road maintenance outdoors and indoors, year-round in all types of weather conditions Maintains and repairs street and sidewalk, performs Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) control, renovation construction work, and repairs street signs Performs vegetation control including mowing grass, trimming trees and hedges, edging, and weed eating, pouring concrete Facility Maintenance (20%) Performs general facility maintenance including but not limited to, irrigation system operation/maintenance Paints, installs signs and plants, pressure washes, changes light bulbs/fixtures, Performs general construction/renovation work such as light electrical and plumbing. Installs and/or repairs fencing, loads, hauls equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites Custodial Maintenance (10%) Performs custodial maintenance of City facilities, grounds and buildings: to include restroom maintenance, trash and debris disposal, restocking supplies and cleaning floors Ensures building safety by implementing preventative measures for environmental concerns to include flooding and wind damage Equipment Maintenance (5%) Maintains equipment and secures equipment to prevent theft or damage Mechanical maintenance of City issued equipment
OTHER DUTIES
Represents the Department at meetings involving assigned activities All employees will have a role in the City's disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as may be designated in the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan Remains on a Rotational on-call shifts Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing or activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma Possess and maintain Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification within 6 months of hire A minimum of two (2) years related work experience A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications
ADDITONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Valid Florida Driver's license National Incident Management System ICS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System Certification, must obtain within 6 months of hire IS-700 National Incident Management System an Introduction Certification, must obtain within 6 months of hire The following courses are designed to provide a
  • baseline, as they introduce basic NIMS and ICS concepts and provide the foundation for higher-level Emergency Operations Center
  • (EOC), MACS
  • and ICS-related training
COMPETENCIES
General knowledge of general maintenance practices Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and other related computer skills Ability to operate a mower, blower, edger, trimmer, sprayer, a variety of hand and power tools/ small machinery, and other equipment to maintain public grounds and facilities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions, physically able to work outside year-round Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Ability to operate motor vehicles and maintain required equipment Ability to complete various forms, reports and other documents Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to recognize safety hazards and to take precautionary measures to protect self and others. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management personnel, co-workers, outside agencies and the general public. Ability to perform skilled maintenance and repair of city buildings, grounds, and equipment
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Works indoors and works outdoors in various weather conditions Works below ground level following safety procedures Exposure to, noise, dust, exhaust, fumes, gases, chemicals, grease or oils, electrical energy, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces, in or with moving objects, offensive odors Moderate to loud noise level in the work environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift, carry, pull, move, and manipulate up to 40 pounds with proper mechanics and equipment Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, equipment, various hand and/or power tools, etc. Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling Tasks involve hand tools, power tools, chainsaw, pole saw, mowers, weed whackers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, nail guns, hand and electrical and plumbing tools Sufficient manual dexterity to allow the use of power tools, a keyboard, and writing Sufficient visual acuity to read and comprehend departmental reports and documents Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid) Applications must be submitted by 05/29/2026 for consideration.
