Job Description

The Sumter County Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Roads and Public Works. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and managing all operations of the Public Works Department for Sumter County. This position oversees infrastructure maintenance and development, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, and fleet management. Major duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Plans, directs, manages, and supervise department, operations, and personnel.
  • Develops plans, estimates, specifications, contracts, and inspection activities for roadway repair, maintenance, and resurfacing; develops bridge projects in coordinates with engineers.
  • Oversees maintenance, repair, and construction of county roads, bridges, rights-of-way, and drainage systems; directs stormwater management and environmental compliance efforts.
  • Coordinates emergency response activities related to public works services, including severe weather events and natural disasters.
  • Develops the annual department budget, monitors expenditures under the current budget.
  • Develops short- and long-term department goals and infrastructure projects.
  • Develops and implements department policies and operating procedures; monitors department activities to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Prepares a variety of regular and special reports, including operations and cost reports.
  • Coordinates with other county departments, municipalities, and external agencies.
  • Performs related duties.
Minimum qualifications include Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public works, construction, or infrastructure management; three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory management; a High School diploma or GED; and possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia. Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.
