Position Overview:
This leadership role oversees a regional veterans' services office, guiding staff who assist veterans and their families with accessing valuable federal, state, and local benefits. The position blends team leadership, community outreach, and public engagement while serving as a key representative at veteran-focused events and meetings throughout the region. Responsibilities include supporting program operations, collaborating on agency goals and initiatives, reviewing complex benefit matters, and building strong partnerships with community organizations and service providers. Essential Functions:
Under administrative direction, this position is responsible as the Division Supervisor for the Efficient operation of the Southern Area Veterans' Service Office Region. Public relations and communications are significant responsibilities of this position; this position represents the Governor and/or Director as required or assigned. Directs the operation of the Veterans' Service Officers engaged in assisting veterans, their spouses/dependents and survivors in obtaining any federal, state, or local benefits for which they are eligible. Develops goals and objectives as a part of the overall direction for the Department's mission statement. Represents the Governor and/or-Director at veteran related activities conducted in the public forum. Meets with the Director and Assistant Director, as a member of the Policy Committee, to address issues, concerns and problems concerning benefits and operations. Reviews complex veterans' claims for benefits that are being adjudicated in administrative proceedings before the United States Veterans' Administration. Works with community, local and state government groups to provide advice and consultation on developing or ongoing operations of service delivery systems for veterans. Accountable for state property within assigned region as determined by agencies property control policy. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with coursework in business or public administration. Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefers at least one (1) year of experience supervising and coordinating the efforts of a geographically dispersed staff. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in public outreach, community engagement, or case management, including the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and service providers to connect veterans with available resources. Extensive knowledge of benefits available to veterans and their dependents as well as the federal and state laws and regulations governing their administration. Prefers demonstrated proficiency in the use of federal veterans' benefits management systems (such as VBMS or VA.gov claims tools) and standard office technology to maintain accurate case records, track claim statuses, and produce correspondence and reports in a timely manner.
Conditions of Employment:
Requires honorable discharge from service in the Armed Services of the United States during a recognized time of hostilities. Requires current or previous accreditation from the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs General Counsel. Requires Training, Responsibility, Involvement and Preparation (TRIP) certification and maintenance throughout employment. Must be able to obtain a PIV Card within the first six months and maintain it throughout your tenure. Acquire and maintain VBMS access. Requires use of agency-supplied material/equipment (i.e., cellphone, computer equipment, etc.) Requires the ability to pass a background check. Must have a valid driver license and be available to drive to remote locations using an agency supplied vehicle. Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
