Job Description

Position summary Provides court based victim support, case coordination, trial assistance, and navigation services for domestic violence cases assigned to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office domestic violence grant project. This position supports victims of domestic violence by maintaining contact, explaining court processes, coordinating referrals, assisting with safety related communication, supporting court attendance, and helping document grant related performance measures. This position is funded in whole or in part through the STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program and performs work within the approved grant project. The approved project includes a Trial Assistant to support coordinated victim services, timely referrals, improved monitoring of high risk cases, effective use of lethality assessment data, and collaboration with Batterer Intervention Programming partners. Essential duties Victim Contact and Court Navigation Serve as a primary court based point of contact for victims in assigned domestic violence cases. Provide victims with clear information about court dates, case status, the criminal court process, victim rights, available services, and opportunities to provide input. Assist victims with understanding crime victim compensation, protection order resources, safety planning resources, and community based support services. Coordinate victim attendance or participation in hearings when appropriate and consistent with court rules and office policy. Accompany high risk victims to court when appropriate and coordinate with advocates, law enforcement, and court security when safety concerns are present. Maintain professional, trauma informed, and respectful communication with victims, witnesses, prosecutors, law enforcement, court staff, service providers, and the public. Referral and Safety Coordination Coordinate timely referrals to the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment and other appropriate victim service providers. Log victim referrals, victim contact, court accompaniment, service coordination, and grant related information in the case management system or other approved tracking system. Identify and flag high risk cases for prosecutor review, including cases involving threats to kill, strangulation, weapon use, firearm access, stalking behavior, repeat offending, escalating violence, or other lethality indicators. Review available Lethality Assessment Protocol information and coordinate with the Domestic Violence Prosecutor regarding victim safety concerns, bond conditions, no contact order issues, and court scheduling needs. Document victim reported concerns related to no contact order violations, intimidation, retaliation, continued abuse, safety threats, or barriers to participation. Promptly communicate safety concerns and case related information to the assigned prosecutor, consistent with confidentiality rules, office policy, and victim safety considerations. Trial and Case Support Assist the Domestic Violence Prosecutor with subpoenas, witness coordination, hearing preparation, document organization, trial preparation, and case follow up. Coordinate information between prosecutors, investigators, law enforcement, court staff, victim advocates, Family Peace Initiative, and other approved community partners. Track Batterer Intervention Programming referrals, attendance reports, completion reports, and non compliance reports for prosecutor review. Help ensure timely communication about hearings, compliance issues, no contact order concerns, and victim safety issues. Assist with preparation of hearing materials, witness availability updates, contact information, and related case support tasks. Support timely case processing by helping monitor upcoming hearings, deadlines, victim contact needs, and case preparation tasks. Documentation and Grant Compliance Maintain accurate grant related data, performance information, and time and activity documentation. Track victim referrals, victim contact, court accompaniment, LAP information, BIP referrals, BIP completion, non compliance events, no contact order violations, and other required measures. Participate in required STOP VAWA, KGGP, domestic violence, lethality assessment, trauma informed practice, victim centered response, confidentiality, and victim rights training. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, project planning, protocol development, and quarterly reviews of aggregate project data. Assist with grant reporting, data collection, project evaluation, and documentation as requested. Perform work within the scope of the approved
STOP VAWA
project and ensure grant funded time is not used for duties outside the approved project. Comply with all applicable
KGGP, STOP
VAWA, office, county, state, and federal requirements. Preferred qualifications Experience working in a legal, criminal justice, court, victim services, social services, or related professional setting. Prior experience in a prosecutor's office, court services, victim advocacy, law enforcement support, or domestic violence service setting. Familiarity with domestic violence dynamics, lethality assessment, protection orders, victim rights, trauma informed communication, and community based advocacy services. Strong written communication, organization, follow through, and attention to detail. Ability to communicate professionally with victims, witnesses, attorneys, law enforcement officers, court staff, service providers, and the public. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations. Ability to work with individuals experiencing trauma, fear, crisis, frustration, or court fatigue. Ability to use case management systems, email, basic office software, and grant tracking tools. Bilingual ability, especially English and Spanish, preferred. Requires regular work with victims, witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, law enforcement, and community partners. Requires work with sensitive, traumatic, and confidential information. Requires professional communication in emotionally difficult or high stress situations. Requires daily time and activity records and compliance with all applicable grant requirements. May require occasional schedule adjustments to attend court proceedings, trainings, multidisciplinary meetings, or urgent case related matters.
