Job Description

Job Overview The City is seeking a highly qualified Public Works Director to lead our comprehensive public works operations. In this role, you will exercise independence and personal discretion to manage the Water, Sewer, Sanitation, and Street Maintenance departments. You will serve as the chief technical advisor to city leadership while ensuring all operations align with City Ordinances and safety policies
Core Duties Team Leadership:
Plan, schedule, and supervise public works crews. Select, train, motivate, and evaluate personnel while managing timecards and minimizing overtime.
Budget & Purchasing:
Develop and implement departmental budget line items. Control purchasing, manage asset inventory, and project future equipment needs.
Project Management:
Prepare cost estimates, draft bid communications, and build weekly schedules outlining active and planned infrastructure projects for the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
Infrastructure Maintenance:
Oversee street repairs, snow removal, drainage systems, and water/wastewater utilities.
Hands-On Support:
Work directly alongside subordinates when needed, which includes performing manual labor during operational peaks or emergencies (e.g., floods, heavy snow).
Compliance & Safety:
Enforce OSHA, state regulations, and city policies regarding safe work practices and chemical handling.
Skills Equipment Mastery:
Proven ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery (e.g., backhoe, road grader, street sweeper, asphalt roller, tractors).
Technical Expertise:
Deep knowledge of construction practices, job site preparation, utility maintenance, storm drain installation, and chemical application (fertilizers/herbicides).
Leadership & Diplomacy:
Strong interpersonal skills to interact with the general public, co-workers, and elected city officials with tact and diplomacy.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds in various weather conditions.
Certifications:
Water Treatment and Wastewater Certifications are highly preferred. Uncertified candidates who are willing and motivated to obtain licensure through city-provided training support are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Pay:
$26.00 - $38.00 per hour
