Job Description

The Town Administrator serves as Chief Executive Officer overseeing the day-to-day operations and management of all Town functions and activities. Under the direction of theMayor and Town Council, the Town Administrator acts in accordance with various municipal, state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to, budgeting, planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and administering all Town functions and activities. This position provides policy guidance, coordinates the activities of department heads and support staff, and fosters cooperative working relationships with civic groups, intergovernment agencies, and Town staff. This position is expected to exercise a considerable degree of independence, initiative and judgement, and is subject to evaluation on the basis of results achieved. Successful candidates must be people focused, exhibit an exemplary customer service approach, and be a committed public servant. The ability to develop and leverage authentic relationships with internal and external stakeholders is critical. Successful candidates will value growth and diversity and demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to equity. The candidate will have successfully served in or demonstrated strong familiarity with the council form of government. Successful candidates will also have a proven record of leadership, fiscal stewardship, innovation, and relationship building. Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, or a related field, complemented by at least 10 years of increasingly responsible local government management experience. An equivalent combination of education and management experience will be considered.
Preferred qualifications include:
a master's degree in Public Administration; completion of the Municipal Administration Program through the UNC School of Government or other leading institution; or experience as a Administrator/Town Manager, Assistant Town Administrator/Manager, and experience with the unique concerns of a coastal town.
