Job Description
The Capitol Police Division is responsible for providing law enforcement and security services for State-owned and leased facilities throughout Nevada. The Division ensures the safety of state employees, elected officials, and visitors through proactive patrol, incident response, and security operations. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business or public administration, criminal justice, or a related field is highly desirable. Five years of progressively responsible supervisory or management experience—preferably in a law enforcement setting. Experience should include personnel supervision, budget development and oversight, and participation in policy and procedure development.

Applicants must meet and maintain minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. Incumbents must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. This role provides executive leadership and oversight of the Capitol Police Division, including personnel, operations, and strategic direction. Responsibilities include overseeing statewide law enforcement and security services for State facilities, as well as directing the Dignitary Protection Unit responsible for the Governor's safety. The position also leads policy and operational development, manages budgets and staffing, and coordinates with internal divisions, state agencies, and external partners to ensure effective service delivery. Compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and department policies is required, along with fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement. Additionally, the position oversees the Dignitary Protection Unit, which provides executive protection services for the Governor. The Division works closely with internal DPS divisions and external partners to maintain a secure and coordinated public safety environment. The ideal candidate is a seasoned law enforcement leader committed to public service, integrity, and accountability. They demonstrate sound judgment and professionalism, with the ability to lead in complex and high-visibility environments. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are critical, particularly in working with executive leadership, elected officials, and partner agencies. This individual is adaptable, strategic, and capable of balancing day-to-day operations with long-term planning. Experience in executive protection, critical infrastructure security, or multi-agency coordination is highly desirable. This position requires strong leadership and organizational management skills, with the ability to provide strategic direction and make sound decisions in complex environments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate effective executive communication and stakeholder engagement, along with experience in law enforcement operations and policy development. Additional competencies include budget and resource management, interagency coordination, critical thinking, and the ability to manage incidents and crises effectively.
