Under general supervision from the Deputy Director of Communications, prepares public information in support of the city's public information program & marketing initiatives; and performs related duties as assigned. Responsible for monitoring and maintaining the city's brand standards and all marketing activities in support of and as it relates to the overall city brand and the branding within city departments. Supervision Received Receives direct supervision from supervisory and/or management staff. Example of Duties Essential Functions:
Participates in all services and activities of the department related to public information and marketing; maintain the confidentiality of all information handled in the course of business. Uses sound public relations, communication and marketing techniques and principles to research and compose various types of communications, such as news releases, media advisories, digital content, brochures, speeches, speaking points, advertisements, market research, marketing plans and marketing related videos, etc., to inform the public about the activities of the city of Las Vegas. Provides support to the City Manager's Office, Mayor and City Council, and departments as it relates to communicating the city's message to the public and the media through various communication channels. Participates in planning, organizing or publicizing city events, including news conferences. Attends city events to communicate during the event through digital channels and other methods. Assists in communicating with the public and media during an emergency. Assists with creating internal communications programs, publications, content and resources for city employees. Edits materials created by other city staff, including news releases, brochures, fliers, and other digital content, etc. Attends City Council and other city meetings as needed to provide staff support and communicate to the media and public about outcomes. Provides support to KCLV Channel 2 as needed by developing scripts and conducting interviews for segments on programs. Works with departments on needs relating to public information so content can be developed and distributed to the public and media via various communication channels. Acts as spokesperson for the city when needed, providing interviews on camera, print and radio. Participates in and provides media training for departments. Maintains effective relationships with staff of other government entities such as other cities, the county, the state and regional districts. Stays informed on best practices and current trends in the area of assignment. Marketing:
Participates in all services and activities of the department related to public information with a specific focus on marketing. Maintains the confidentiality of all information handled in the course of business. Uses sound communications techniques and principles to research and compose various types of correspondence, such as collateral materials, advertising and marketing messages, marketing plans, newsletter marketing, and marketing video scripts, in an effort to inform the public about the activities of the city of Las Vegas. Assists with setting brand standards and policies with Director of Communications, the deputy director and marketing & brand supervisor for review and implementation by City Manager. Upon implementation, edits and ensures (with team) all communications material created by other city staff remains consistent to brand standards & policies. Works with graphic design and print media teams to ensure city's design standards are consistent. Works with city departments and use sound marketing techniques and principles to research, develop and implement marketing campaigns that inform the public about the activities of the city of Las Vegas. Coordinates placing media buys (TV, radio, newspaper, etc.) in support of marketing campaigns. Coordinates purchase orders, invoices and contracts related to marketing purchases. Creates agendas for meetings with city departments, conducts meetings and assists with assignments from meetings. Public/Media Relations:
Responds to media inquiries from local and international representatives; establishes and maintains media contacts and monitors news coverage of city events and initiatives; provides verified information to media and respond if information is inaccurate; proactively pitches stories of interest to media; compiles detailed media reports to generate a reporting structure that shows department milestones and achievements. Responds to open records requests submitted by members of the media; coordinates with the affected departments and City Clerk's Office before release. Advises staff regarding publicity, media relations and communications techniques in dealing with the public and the media; accompany staff members to media interviews. Digital Content:
Write and shoot/edit daily content spanning websites, blogs, social media, and email marketing. Develop digital content that drives strategic goals such as increase of web traffic, social media engagement and encourages readers to regularly visit and rely on digital content as a key source of information. Edit content on online editing tools. Coordinate the creation of fresh digital content and manage its distribution across multiple digital platforms including social media, website, blogs, social audio, and other digital platforms that support communications initiatives, campaigns and promotions. This would include interactive infographics and other digital assets, such as video and audio clips. Research, develop, and implement approved social media strategies and identify opportunities for new and engaging digital content. Engage with the community across various platforms to build relationships through social media discussions to enable proactive and positive interactions. Monitor and measure the performance of social media campaigns across multiple platforms; develop and implement improvements. Develop ads for digital marketing outlets including social media. Analyze data and provide recommendations towards achieving overall marketing goals on digital platforms. Train city staff and elected officials on social media and photo/video best practices, including how to enter content and keep their content up to date using the city's content management system. Learn new trends and implement relevant changes to strategies based on industry changes and advancements. Work with in-house graphic designers and creative services group as well as outside agencies to execute on digital pieces, as well as manage some projects independently. Manage assigned department website pages through a content management system. Coordinate with other content creators. Marginal Functions Assist other areas of assignment as needed in the various disciplines with the Public Affairs Office. Represent the department and may represent the city at public appearances. Minimum Requirements Assistant Public Information Officer Experience:
Depending on assignment, one year of experience is required in one of the following areas: public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, web content design/development, digital media, social media or a related area.
Training:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major in public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, communication design, web design, Spanish, or a closely related field. A combination of formal education and directly related work experience may substitute for the degree. The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.
Special Requirements:
Spanish bilingual skills are strongly preferred depending on assignment.
Public Information Officer Experience:
Depending on assignment, two years of increasingly responsible experience is required in one of the following areas: public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, web content design/development, digital media, social media or a related area.
Training:

Appointive Compensation and Benefits
  • 2026 COMPENSATION Annual Base Pay Increases Employees are eligible for annual performance-based merit increase or cash bonus, typically in first pay period of fiscal year.
City Manager and City Council may approve annual cost of living increase.
BENEFITS
Uniform Allowance Applies to uniformed appointives in Fire & Rescue, Public Safety, and Municipal Court, currently $1,500/year Retirement Eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the city's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS. Deferred Compensation Plan The city offers a 457(b) Plan, a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options. Deferred Compensation Match City provides a 100% match annually (on a per pay period basis) to your contributions, up to the following amounts in a 401(a) plan
  • o Years 1-2 (0-24 months)
  • $4,000 o Years 3-4 (25-48 months)
  • $5,000 o Year 5 (49-60 months)
  • $6,000 o After 5 years (>60 months)
  • $6,000 Years of service in Benefits Plus Tiers I, II, and III combined Employees are fully vested in the match after 5 years of service or at age 65.
Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental, and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium. Life and AD&D Insurance City provides $100,000 insurance at no cost. Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase. Disability Insurance City provides long term and short term disability policies: o STD City pays 100% of base salary, for up to 90 days of an approved medical disability leave lasting over one week under STD, from first day of disability City pays 100% of base salary for a period over 90 days, if employee has applied for long term disability or PERS disability retirement, until a determination is final or employee is separated

Public Safety Appointives are not eligible for city STD benefits. o
LTD:
Benefits may begin after 90 days of an approved disability leave. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation. Tuition Reimbursement Employee Assistance Program Annual Health & Educational Wellness Reimbursement Employees may apply for reimbursement up to $2,400 per year for out of pocket health & educational wellness expenses. Reimbursement amounts may also be used for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) classes taken in pursuit of a college degree and student loan repayments for the employee and immediate family members.
ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS
Employees covered by a city health plan and their covered spouse and dependents over age 18 are eligible for a comprehensive wellness physical exam annually at no cost to them at ARC Health and Wellness.

Sick Leave Accrual:
