(540) 832-2449 Director of Public Works (FTE, $59,134 - $71,877 DOE) Position Overview The Town of Gordonsville is seeking a skilled, hands-on, and community-focused professional to serve as its next Director of Public Works. This leadership position oversees the Town's public infrastructure and essential services, including streets, water distribution, stormwater systems, and facilities maintenance. The Director of Public Works is responsible for project management, public construction, maintenance and repair, management of staff and assurance that all work projects are completed in accordance with plans, specifications, pertinent codes, ordinances, laws, regulations or goals and in a safe and efficient manner. The Director conducts field inspections and investigations and performs a variety of other administrative or technical tasks related to assigned areas of responsibility. The Director serves as a member of the Town's Senior Leadership Team. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage all Public Works operations, including streets, utilities, drainage, and facilities. Supervise and support a small, multi-functional team (7-10 employees). Fosters a safe and productive work environment in line with Town policies. Oversee water distribution systems; ensure compliance with Virginia DEQ and VDH regulations. Plan and implement infrastructure maintenance and capital improvement projects. Develop and manage departmental budgets and capital plans. Coordinate contractors, engineers, and regional partners. Respond to citizen concerns and present updates to Town Council. Direct emergency response activities, including snow removal and storm response. Occasionally serve on-call evenings and weekends and responds to Public Works emergencies when called. Knowledge Required Working knowledge of procedures, methods, and techniques of construction, maintenance and repair, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance within Public Works areas. Working knowledge in the interpretation and application of pertinent Town codes, and State and/or Federal laws and regulations. Working knowledge in project planning, implementation, and management. Working knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a Public Works maintenance program. Working knowledge of principles and practices of building and grounds maintenance. Working knowledge principles and procedures of record keeping. Working knowledge of safety procedures and practices. Working knowledge and experience in supervising, training, evaluating and directing the work of others. Working knowledge of effective reception and customer service practices. Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and usage. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in public administration, engineering, construction management, or a related field preferred. At least five (5) years of supervisory experience in public works, utilities, or local government operations. Construction, public works, or utility supervisory experience are strongly preferred. Experience in a small-town or rural setting is highly desirable. Equivalent combinations of education, civilian experience, and military service will be considered. Virginia Waterworks Operator License (or ability to obtain within 12-18 months). Preferred Certifications Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Work Zone Safety Certification Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain. OSHA safety training certifications.
