P/T Operations Assistant - Classic Mercedes Parts

Business Info:

Luxe Parts sells classic Mercedes parts on eBay, from the 50s through 00s. I've been selling classic Mercedes parts since 2012. I used to run a much larger operation; now it's just me and one remote employee working <10 hrs/week. We ship an average of 10-30 orders per week currently but that will go up considerably over time. We have almost 1,000 parts listed but that is only about 20% of the total inventory. Located up a rough road in a beautiful canyon on the north side of Morongo Valley on my property. Three 40' shipping containers and another small box container.

Job Description:

I have 14 years of experience with this subject matter which has a very long and extended learning curve. Ultimately I'm looking for someone who can manage operations so that this business can expand without taking over my life (again). It will take some time to get there and that will mean training through a variety of tasks and gaining familiarity with the parts and the business operations. To begin, there's a lot of work dismantling and cleaning parts in order to prep them for sale as well as to make room for additional shelving. Dismantling and cleaning will continue to be a significant part of the job. The next step will be learning product photography, which includes capturing important details about the item in addition to showing off the product in a desirable way. It will also introduce you to the inventory organization system. Shipping will be months later, not because it's difficult to learn but because there is a very high degree of accuracy needed. The stakes are high because mistakes can have very large impacts. After a year or so you would take over most of the customer service. Eventually we will either run out of parts to list or storage space for inventory, but there will still be a lot of shipping and customer service work to balance that out. My goal is to be able to step back to only administration by the end of 2027.

What I'm Looking For:

Because there is a steep learning curve on the parts themselves, having a history specifically with Classic Mercedes is not vital. Some knowledge of cars and general handiness is somewhat important. Learning things quickly and retaining what you learn is much more important. A good eye for detail is very important, as is some skill at photography. Similarly, good visual memory is a huge help for many aspects of the job. Excellent communication is vital in order to facilitate the large amount of learning there is to do along the way, also because you will be working on site without me for long periods.

Employee Expectations:

Working outside in all desert weather, including the heat, although shifts can be adjusted for summer hours, etc. Direct communication about needs and availability is a must. If you don't know how to do something, ask. I'm great at teaching but not always good at guessing needs, comprehension, or expectations of others. I am only human. I do my best to curb frustration in my communication, but it will happen sometimes when things get stressful. Own your mistakes and forgive me mine and I'll do the same. I only want to ask you something once. I don't expect you to remember everything I tell you, but I do expect you to be responsible for retaining and organizing the information that you receive in a way that works for you so that it doesn't disappear.

Logistics:

I'm offering $25/hr to start with raises every few months as you take on more responsibilities. I need you here Mon-Wed-Fri so that you can drop off USPS and Fedex packages on your way home. You'd work shorter shifts at first (3-4 hours) and eventually start working 4-6 hour shifts. There's potential for more hours as you're more trained and the business grows. When I can be flexible I'm very flexible; I just need direct communication and I need the job to get done. The road here is rough, if you have a small car with low clearance this job likely won't feel sustainable for you.
