DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) supports the University's mission by providing access to UC Santa Cruz, acting as fiscal stewards, and managing the sustainable planning, design, and operation of safe and equitable bicycle/pedestrian programs, transit services, parking, and other transportation-related needs. TAPS is dedicated to being innovative, sustainable, and customer-focused providers of access to UC Santa Cruz. More information can be found at: https://transportation.ucsc.edu/ JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the TAPS Field Operations Supervisor, the incumbent coordinates day-to-day field operations for TAPS event parking and traffic control programs. The position oversees event and traffic control activities, evaluates staffing and equipment needs, and serves as a field point of contact during regular and special campus events. Responsibilities include hiring, training, and supervising student employees who support event operations, permit issuance and sales, surveys, light equipment repairs, and related administrative functions, while ensuring compliance with university procedures, including cash handling and post-event reconciliation.

Budgeted Salary:
$29.38/hourly Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. JOB DUTIES 50
% - Event & Traffic Operations Coordinate, oversee, and execute campus event and traffic control operations with minimal supervision. Independently monitor the AIMS program and related systems to anticipate upcoming events and operational impacts. Analyze event details and determine appropriate staffing levels, equipment needs, and site requirements. Develop, manage, and adjust staffing schedules for student employees supporting both events and traffic control operations, and use standard office software to create operational spreadsheets and reports. Lead on-site event set-up, operations, and breakdown, including parking operations, signage deployment, and real-time problem resolution. Coordinate traffic control operations at key intersections during peak hours and special events to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow. Serve as the primary field liaison between
TAPS, UC
Police Department, campus partners, and event stakeholders. Resolve customer issues and operational conflicts in the field using sound judgment and established policies. Operate and coordinate the use of university-owned vehicles in support of field operations across campus. 30% - Student Hiring, Training & Functional Supervision Hire, onboard, train, and functionally supervise student employees assigned to event and traffic control operations. Develop and deliver structured training covering safety procedures, customer service standards, event logistics, and intersection operations. Train students to support permit issuance and permit sales during events, including proper handling and reconciliation procedures. Train students to conduct parking and occupancy surveys and ensure accurate data collection. Train students to perform light repairs and basic maintenance of field equipment, including barricades and signage. Evaluate student performance, provide ongoing coaching, and address performance or conduct concerns. Identify, train, and mentor student Leads who assist with daily oversight and on-site coordination. Document and report workplace incidents and performance issues to the TAPS Field Operations Supervisor as appropriate. 20% - Administrative & Program Support Review staffing schedules and student timesheets to ensure compliance with policy and accurate time reporting. Approve student payroll on a bi-weekly basis. Maintain accountability for the issuance, use, and return of uniforms and equipment assigned to student employees. Coordinate with the TAPS Business Office to address lost, damaged, or unreturned equipment. Coordinate daily parking lot surveys and manage collected operational data. Schedule TAPS Events and Maintenance vehicles for routine and supplemental maintenance and maintain mileage records. Maintain accurate operational records and support administrative functions related to event and traffic programs. Provide analysis, feedback, and recommendations for short- and long-term program improvements. Work field shifts as operational needs require, including nights and weekends. Participate in campus event planning, safety, and coordination meetings. Attend required training sessions, both on and off campus.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent experience. Leadership and interpersonal skills sufficient to motivate staff, delegate, assign, and monitor workload, for a large student-based operation. Experience in cash handling and record keeping skills and the ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy, in compliance with all PCI standards, campus policies, and procedures. Organizational and time management skills sufficient to prioritize competing job responsibilities and function under the pressure of meeting deadlines with frequent interruptions and with strict attention to detail. Ability to adhere to time and attendance requirements and punctuality standards. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential situations or materials. Skill and experience to present a positive, customer service-oriented public image, maintain a courteous and harmonious working relationship with the campus community and members of the public, and train student workers to do the same. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and co-workers of diverse cultural backgrounds. Experience and knowledge of safety issues as they pertain to services provided in roadways (e.g., selling permits, traffic-control) and the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally. Ability to use a computer and computer programs (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, database, scheduling software), as well as a variety of office machines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with safely directing traffic and providing information/directions to visitors. Familiarity with UCSC campus roads and parking spaces. Experience planning and coordinating multiple large events simultaneously. Experience coordinating large numbers of student employees
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process. Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire. Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program. Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record. Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation. Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities. The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site. Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends. Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary. Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
Clery Act:
This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC § 1092(f)). Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
