POSITION OVERVIEW
The Survey Operations Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the survey function across the Millis Family of Companies portfolio of civil and commercial construction companies, including Millis Equipment, MDC, and Landecor. This Houston-based role combines technical survey expertise with operational coordination, overseeing a two-person survey crew, managing 3D model development and quality assurance, and serving as the primary link between field survey data and project teams. The ideal candidate brings strong CAD and survey methodology skills, communicates effectively across project managers, superintendents, and subcontractors, and operates with minimal supervision.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Survey Operations & Crew Management Schedule and coordinate a two-person survey crew across 10-20 active job sites for staking, layout, spot checks, grade verification, and as-built surveys Prioritize crew deployment based on project schedules, critical path milestones, and superintendent requests Ensure survey crew maintain field accuracy standards and follows established quality control procedures Conduct periodic field visits (approximately 40% of time) to verify work quality, troubleshoot issues, and support crew on complex layouts 3D Model Development & Management Build and maintain 3D surface models, alignments, and digital terrain models using Civil 3D/AutoCAD and Trimble Business Center Facilitate model-building by third-party survey and engineering consultants, including scope definition, data handoff, and quality review Coordinate model-building needs for remote offices in Dallas and Austin, ensuring consistency in standards, deliverable formats, and turnaround expectations Manage version control and file organization for all survey models and data across the portfolio Plan Review & Conflict Resolution Review CAD models against construction plans and specifications to identify conflicts, discrepancies, and constructability issues Document conflicts with supporting data and escalate to the appropriate Project Manager or Superintendent for resolution Track open conflicts through resolution and verify corrective actions are reflected in updated models Participate in coordination meetings to represent the survey perspective on grading, utilities, and site layout Drone & Photogrammetry Operations Operate and manage photogrammetry-capable drones for site progress documentation, volumetric calculations, and topographic data collection Process drone-captured data into usable deliverables (point clouds, orthomosaic imagery, surface models) Maintain FAA Part 107 compliance (certification preferred; company will support training if needed) Evaluate emerging drone and photogrammetry technologies and recommend adoption where cost-effective Equipment & Tools Management Maintain inventory and condition tracking for all survey equipment (total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, drones, levels) Manage calibration schedules and coordinate repairs to minimize crew downtime Recommend equipment upgrades, replacements, and new acquisitions with supporting cost-benefit justification Ensure all equipment is properly stored, transported, and secured between deployments
QUALIFICATIONS
Required 3-5 years of experience in survey or civil construction, with demonstrated progression in responsibility Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D / AutoCAD and/or Trimble Business Center Working knowledge of construction plans, grading plans, utility plans, and site layout procedures Experience coordinating field crews or scheduling across multiple active job sites Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interface professionally with PMs, superintendents, engineers, and subcontractors Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to Houston-area job sites often Preferred FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire) Experience with photogrammetry software Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or related field
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This role operates in a hybrid office/field environment. Field visits require the ability to navigate active construction sites, including uneven terrain, exposure to weather conditions, and proximity to heavy equipment. The position requires the ability to lift and carry survey equipment (up to 50 lbs), stand for extended periods, and drive between job sites throughout the Houston metro area.
