  • Full-time Summary The Planner / Scheduler is responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing production schedules to ensure on-time delivery of engineered and manufactured gearing products.
This role serves as the central coordination point between Engineering, Sales/Quoting, Purchasing, and Manufacturing to balance capacity, materials, and customer demand in a high-mix, low-volume job shop environment Primary Responsibilities Production Planning & Scheduling Develop and maintain detailed production schedules for machining, assembly, heat treat, inspection, and shipping operations Sequence jobs based on capacity, material availability, customer priority, and shop constraints Monitor work orders through all stages of production to ensure schedule adherence Adjust schedules in real time based on machine downtime, labor constraints, or engineering changes Cross-Functional Coordination Work closely with Applications Engineering and Quoting to understand job scope, lead times, and customer commitments Coordinate with Purchasing to ensure raw materials and purchased components are available to support schedule requirements Partner with Manufacturing Supervisors to align daily shop execution with master schedule Communicate schedule risks, delays, and recovery plans to leadership Material & Capacity Planning Review BOMs and routings for accuracy and feasibility Identify long-lead materials and initiate procurement timing Balance workload across CNC machining, manual machining, gear cutting, grinding, and assembly resources Support capacity planning and constraint analysis for key equipment Job Tracking & Reporting Maintain ERP/MRP system integrity (job status, due dates, routing updates, labor reporting) Provide daily/weekly production status updates to management Track on-time delivery performance, bottlenecks, and schedule adherence metrics Support KPI reporting for production efficiency and backlog health Continuous Improvement Identify scheduling inefficiencies and recommend process improvements Support implementation of lean manufacturing practices and flow optimization Assist in standardizing routing times and improving estimating feedback loops Preferred Qualifications Experience in gearboxes, gear manufacturing, or heavy mechanical assemblies Familiarity with capacity planning tools or advanced scheduling systems Lean manufacturing Experience working directly with engineering Knowledge and Skill Requirements Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or related technical field Strong Excel and data analysis skills 2-5+ years of experience in manufacturing planning, production scheduling, or materials control Experience in job shop / make-to-order manufacturing (preferred: gear manufacturing, heavy industrial equipment, machining, or similar) Strong understanding of machining processes (CNC, manual, grinding, assembly, heat treat) Experience using ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Epicor, Oracle, Infor, or similar) Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and
