Job Description

Director of Logistics Position Summary The Director of Logistics is responsible for leading the company's logistics organization and developing the systems, processes, people, and partnerships required to deliver exceptional customer service, transportation performance, and cost control. This position provides strategic leadership for transportation operations, carrier management, fleet operations, freight procurement, compliance, customer communication, and logistics technology. The Director is accountable for building a scalable logistics organization that supports company growth while creating visibility, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the supply chain. Organizational Leadership Lead and develop the logistics team through coaching, accountability, and professional development. Build a culture centered on ownership, communication, customer service, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. Establish clear organizational structure, roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations. Develop future leaders and succession plans within the logistics organization. Align team objectives with company goals and strategic priorities. Foster collaboration between Logistics, Sales, Customer Service, Warehousing, Operations, and Finance. Remove organizational barriers that limit team performance. Ensure the department can successfully operate without excessive executive involvement. Logistics Strategy & Process Architecture Design and implement scalable logistics processes that support long-term company growth. Establish operational standards, policies, and procedures that drive consistency and efficiency. Identify operational constraints and develop sustainable solutions. Lead process improvement initiatives that reduce cost, improve service, and increase productivity. Evaluate and implement new technologies, automation opportunities, and workflow improvements. Create systems that proactively prevent problems rather than reactively manage them. Transportation & Carrier Strategy Develop and oversee transportation strategies that balance service, cost, and capacity. Establish transportation planning processes that ensure on-time shipment performance. Develop carrier sourcing, selection, and performance management strategies. Negotiate carrier agreements, pricing structures, and service expectations. Build and maintain strategic relationships with transportation partners. Develop contingency plans and carrier diversification strategies to reduce operational risk. Evaluate private fleet, broker, and common carrier opportunities. Customer Experience & Communication Establish communication standards that provide customers and internal stakeholders with timely and accurate shipment information. Develop escalation procedures for service failures and transportation disruptions. Ensure transportation issues are communicated proactively with clear recovery plans. Partner with Sales and Customer Service to protect and strengthen customer relationships. Lead root-cause investigations involving recurring customer service issues. Financial Performance & Cost Management Own logistics financial performance across all transportation functions. Develop and execute strategies that reduce freight, fuel, fleet, and transportation-related expenses. Establish cost-control processes and financial accountability throughout the department. Analyze transportation trends and identify opportunities for operational savings. Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning activities. Present logistics financial performance and recommendations to executive leadership. Fleet, Safety & Compliance Leadership Establish programs that ensure safe, compliant, and efficient transportation operations. Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, Hours of Service, and other regulatory requirements. Develop fleet replacement, maintenance, and utilization strategies. Promote a culture of safety through leadership, training, and accountability. Ensure proper management of inspections, certifications, licensing, and insurance requirements. Performance Management & Analytics Own departmental KPI performance and continuous improvement efforts. Establish scorecards for team members, carriers, vendors, and transportation providers. Lead weekly and monthly performance reviews. Drive corrective actions when performance falls below expectations. Develop dashboards and reporting systems that provide visibility into operational performance. Present logistics performance, risks, opportunities, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership. Technology & Systems Leadership Drive adoption and optimization of transportation management systems, logistics technology, and reporting platforms. Identify automation opportunities that improve efficiency, visibility, and scalability. Partner with IT and system administrators to improve workflows and data accuracy. Ensure transportation data integrity and reporting reliability. Champion technology initiatives that support operational excellence. Strategic Planning & Business Growth Develop annual logistics objectives, budgets, and strategic initiatives. Evaluate transportation capacity requirements to support future growth. Support new customer onboarding, acquisitions, facility expansions, and business development initiatives. Recommend long-term transportation strategies that align with company objectives. Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership regarding logistics and transportation matters. Qualifications Required 5+ years of progressive logistics, transportation, supply chain, or distribution leadership experience. Demonstrated success building teams, processes, and operational systems. Strong financial, analytical, and business insights. Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and organizational change. Proven ability to manage carrier relationships, transportation costs, and service performance. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Preferred Experience in warehousing, 3PL or E-commerce environments. Experience leading both private fleet and common carrier operations. Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and transportation compliance requirements. Experience with ERP, TMS, WMS, and business intelligence systems. Success in This Role Success is measured by creating a logistics organization that consistently delivers exceptional service, strong communication, operational efficiency, and financial performance, not by personally solving daily transportation issues. The Director of Logistics develops the people, systems, processes, and partnerships necessary to support company growth while reducing dependency on executive oversight and daily intervention.
Pay:
$60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
