Job Description

Position Summary The Supervisor of Sterile Processing and Surgical Services Materials Management is responsible for the daily operations, supervision, and performance of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and materials management functions supporting Perioperative Services. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and timely reprocessing of surgical instrumentation and equipment while maintaining regulatory compliance, effective inventory control, and coordinated availability of equipment and supplies. The Supervisor partners closely with the Operating Room, Surgical Services team, Infection Prevention, Supply Chain, and vendor partners to optimize workflow, support high‑quality patient care, and promote fiscally responsible practices. This role also maintains oversight and tracking of contracts related to surgical services. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Operational Oversight Supervise daily operations of Sterile Processing and Surgical Services Materials Management, ensuring appropriate department coverage and workflow efficiency Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for sterile processing technicians and materials management staff Develop staffing schedules and allocate resources to support case volumes, on‑call requirements, and emergent surgical needs Serve as a subject matter expert for OR staff and surgeons regarding instrumentation, equipment readiness, and supply availability Maintain contract files related to surgical services and support contract evaluation in collaboration with the Director Sterile Processing Operations Oversee all decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, and distribution activities in compliance with AAMI, AORN, CDC, DNV, and other applicable standards Ensure surgical instruments and trays are properly maintained, tracked, repaired, and replaced as needed Monitor quality metrics including sterilization records, immediate‑use steam sterilization (IUSS), tray accuracy, and turnaround times Maintain competency‑based training and orientation programs for SPD staff Materials Management - Surgical Services Manage par levels, inventory accuracy, and supply chain workflows for perioperative services Coordinate ordering, receiving, stocking, and distribution of surgical supplies and implants Collaborate with the OR team to evaluate product utilization, reduce waste, and support cost‑effective purchasing practices Partner with Supply Chain to manage vendor relationships, consignment inventory, and contract compliance Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements (CMS, DNV, OSHA, AAMI, AORN) Lead internal audits, maintain documentation, and prepare departments for inspections and surveys Maintain sterile processing policies, procedures, and work instructions Support patient safety initiatives and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities as needed Education & Training Oversee onboarding, continuing education, and annual competency validation for SPD and materials management staff Support staff in achieving and maintaining professional certifications (CRCST, CIS, CER, CHL, etc.) Provide education and in‑services to OR staff regarding proper instrument handling and sterile processing best practices Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent CRCST or CSPDT certification Minimum of 3 years of sterile processing, OR supply chain, or related clinical experience Prior leadership or supervisory experience Preferred Degree or certification in healthcare, business, or management Experience with hospital‑based surgical services materials management
