Role Overview:

The Traffic Signs Supervisor will oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs and roadway markings to ensure compliance with INDOT standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Plan, schedule, and prioritize sign work orders based on safety needs, traffic impact, and statewide maintenance directives. Conduct field inspections to verify sign visibility, retroreflectivity, accuracy, and structural integrity, especially after crashes, weather events, or construction activities. Maintain accurate records of sign inventory, work orders, materials, and equipment, and report status updates through INDOT maintenance management systems. Train and supervise crew members in safe work-zone practices, proper installation techniques, equipment operation, and adherence to INDOT safety policies. Maintain emergency on call schedule, call outs and any other needs to assure traffic safety. Oversee fabrication, installation, and maintenance of large guide signs, overhead panel signs, and interstate/expressway sign structures. Coordinate inspections of panel signs to ensure proper mounting, structural stability, nighttime retroreflectivity, and compliance with MUTCD and INDOT design standards. Manage inventory of panel sign materials such as aluminum sheets, extruded panels, overlays, and reflective sheeting. Review and interpret engineering drawings or sign layout sheets to ensure accurate panel sign dimensions, legends, arrows, and spacing. Use of GIS, DMO/Salesforce and Microsoft Suite. 

Location:

This position is in INDOT's LaPorte District Traffic, Signs Division. 

Salary Statement:

 The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. 

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: Comply with Indiana Department of Transport (INDOT)'s Safety Policy and Procedures. Assign work to units ensuring that the needed materials and equipment are available. Ensure the most effective utilization of personnel, time, and equipment for each task. Provide supervision to a unit or group of employees while explaining the purpose of the job and all the programs that affect the work. Oversee operation and maintenance ensuring that supervised employees accomplish the work orders by a scheduled finish date with minimal interruptions to the various operations. Support the Winter operations duties which include snow and ice removal. You will also help with the maintenance and troubleshooting of the District brine machines and application equipment. Assist with implementation/improvement of operational programs, procedures, and project planning. Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures. Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation. Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.

Specialized knowledge of highway principles, practices, methods, standards, and techniques relative to maintenance and repair of highway bridges, roads, heavy and general equipment, traffic markings etc. Considerable knowledge and experience in all phases of maintenance development. Working knowledge of OSHA, safety precautions, and regulations, compliance requirements as they relate to maintenance of bridge, traffic markings, highways, and equipment. Supervisory experience of multiple employees, minimum of one (1) year. Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment. Considerable knowledge and experience in transportation operations. General knowledge of welding, repairing, and general maintenance of equipment. Ability to properly schedule employee hours and coordinate trucks and materials needed during winter operations. Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets. A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered. Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
