The Director of Transportation is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing all district transportation services. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of students while maintaining compliance with all state and federal regulations. The Director of Transportation supervises transportation staff, manages transportation operations, and supports the district's educational programs by ensuring transportation services operate smoothly and without disruption.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned. Oversee all district transportation operations, ensuring services are safe, reliable, and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations. Recruit, train, and mentor a diverse team of drivers, dispatchers, and mechanics. Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth. Design and optimize bus routes for general education, special education, and extracurricular activities using modern routing software. Conduct incident investigations, implement corrective actions, and maintain meticulous records for driver certifications, medical physicals, and payroll. Coordinate with maintenance staff to monitor vehicle health and ensure the district fleet meets all safety Serve as the primary point of contact for parents and administrators regarding transportation schedules, safety concerns, and emergency planning. Collaborate with district leadership to manage the departmental budget and plan for long-term capital needs (e.g., fleet replacement).SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages bus drivers, substitute drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, and clerical staff. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, assisting with the hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent.Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years in transportation operations with demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.Licensing:
Valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with S and P endorsements and Air Brake certification.Technical Skills :
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel) and experience with computerized transportation/routing software.Communication:
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to the Board of Education and the public.ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
This position requires a mix of office-based management and work in the field.Candidates must be able to:
