POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Supervisor for Specialized Transportation & Howell Regional Transportation Collaborative (RTC) assists in the leadership, coordination, and oversight of student transportation services to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations. A primary responsibility of this position is assisting in the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive driver training programs, including onboarding, CDL preparation, classroom instruction and ongoing professional development for transportation staff. The position supports the Supervisor of Transportation in maintaining compliance with federal and state pupil transportation regulations. This position also assists with driver recruitment, incident management, student behavior support, and operational supervision of transportation staff In the absence of the Supervisor of Transportation, the Associate Supervisor assumes responsibility for administration and supervision of the transportation system in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and district policies.

Positively represents the Livingston Educational Service Agency Transportation Department in all interactions with staff, students, and the community regarding phone inquiries, staff scheduling, routing, complaints and other matters pertaining to transportation/operations. Maintains confidentiality of Agency information when transmitting transportation information to schools, drivers, the public, and others. Maintain accurate driver qualification and training records in accordance with federal and state regulations. Assist with monitoring regulatory updates and implementing changes to department training and compliance procedures as required. Support internal audits and documentation reviews to ensure compliance with CDL training, driver qualification, and safety regulations. Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to drivers, bus assistants and trainers to reinforce safe and effective transportation practices. Assist in coordinating CDL training and certification for new drivers, including knowledge and skills testing for Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Collaborate with transportation leadership to maintain safe operating standards consistent with federal commercial motor vehicle safety regulations. Maintain accurate documentation of safety meetings, in-service training attendance, and required certifications. Identify safety trends, incidents, or operational concerns and incorporate them into future training and safety discussions. Work with department leadership to evaluate training effectiveness and continuously improve the department's safety training program. Assist in developing and implementing recruitment strategies to attract qualified bus drivers and bus assistants. Participate in job fairs, community outreach events, and recruitment campaigns to promote employment opportunities within the transportation department. Assist in coordinating the hiring and onboarding process for new transportation staff. Support new employees through the onboarding process, including orientation and introduction to departmental safety and operational procedures. Assist in developing retention strategies to support driver satisfaction, professional development, and long-term employment. Work with school administrators, special education staff, parents, and transportation personnel to resolve transportation concerns. Incorporate student behavior trends and safety incidents into driver training programs and safety meetings. Assist in developing and implementing behavior management plans for students requiring specialized transportation. Accurately maintains and processes attendance. Answers routine phone inquiries, takes messages, routes calls. Types, prepares, distributes reports, correspondence. Maintains accurate files and records including, but not limited to, fleet information, accidents, and property damage.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Follows up on emergency building conditions. Assists in developing specifications packages and bid sheets for capital improvement projects. Operates office machines. Orders, processes and maintains materials and equipment (including work orders). Distributes mail for the transportation/operations department. Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees. May occasionally be required to fulfill the role and responsibility of a bus driver, bus assistant or dispatcher. Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the general and day-to-day supervision of the transportation/operations dept. and in the absence of the Supervisor of Transportation, supervise the transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies. Assist in supervision of Agency Driver & Assistant Training Programs, recruitment and onboarding of new staff. EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
Required:
Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet operations or student transportation.
Required:
Must possess or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Preferred:
Michigan School Business Officials Certification in Transportation, 3+ years of professional driver training/instruction, knowledge of transportation routing systems.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before parents, staff and students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to type accurately. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Proficient in Word and Excel software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear, and continuously perform repetitive hand, arm, or finger motions (as in typing). Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is continuously interacting with the staff and the public.
Critical Requirements:
The individual must frequently meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interact with the public and other workers, and occasionally work irregular or extended hours, often under pressure from multiple demands.
Site-Based Activities:
The employee is occasionally required to inspect vehicle maintenance areas, bus yards, and bus routes, which may involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps, or exposure to seasonal weather conditions. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment.
