Job Description

The Director of Transportation provides leadership and direction in managing the Transportation Department in accordance with district, state and federal regulations and policies. The Director develops, plans, and executes all transportation functions and is responsible for ensuring services are delivered in a safe and efficient manner, within budget. This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective communication within the department and with students, guardians, community members, district staff, and department and school-based administrators. This position reports to the Chief Operations Officer.

7/1/2026 Benefits--Medical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Additional benefits may include vacation, sick, personal days, and paid holidays. Often, positions have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary schedule, all in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) as negotiated.
SALARY:
$131,971 - $157,579 Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar position. Promotion or transfer placements will be determined by percentage of increase and consideration of appropriate experience credit. Plans, directs and supervises the operations and activities of the district's transportation department including the establishment of routes, scheduling and transport of students to and from school, special functions and activities, control of student conduct on buses, driver training, and proper repair, functionality and maintenance of equipment. Oversee the development of safe and efficient bus routes and stops, including special education transportation within and outside the district, McKinney-Vento and other contracted carriers. Responsible for the management, maintenance and replacement of the district's entire fleet. Prepares and recommends transportation department capital, operating budgets, and controls expenditures within approved budgets. Prepares long- and short-range plans for operation of the transportation department. Prepared long-range plans for acquiring new and replacement district vehicles. Prepares cost estimates for requested or proposed additions and/or changes in transportation services. Ensures timely and accurate reporting for district, state and federal reporting requirements, including fleet maintenance records. Establishes operating practices and procedures to ensure conformance to federal and state rules and regulations regarding pupil transportation. Administers the collective bargaining agreements associated with transportation services. Participates in collective bargaining teams and regular labor management meetings. Investigates and resolves complaints about transportation services and personnel conduct. Investigates and recommends courses of action on those disciplinary problems that could result in suspension of pupil transportation privileges. Oversee the selection of all hires, ensures all are properly trained and evaluated during probationary periods as well as annual reviews. Conducts low level discipline meetings/summaries and works in partnership with the human resources department through formal employee investigations. Partners with the Risk Management department around crossing guard program and ensure that city and county safety lights are operating as scheduled. Integrates transportation operations in the district's emergency response program and represents the district on various internal and external committees as assigned. Primary liaison to outside agencies and organizations related to transportation issues. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Experience/Training:
Bachelor's degree in administration, management or a relevant field of study. Five years of progressively responsible experience working in a large organization with a focus on transportation operations, logistics, facilities management, or related field.
Knowledge Of:
District policy and procedures, federal and state laws, regulations and standards pertaining to the transportation industry, school buses and transportation. Fleet operations, equipment needs, and applicable software. Transportation vehicle acquisition, replacement specifications and applicable safety and legal standards. Principles, practices and techniques of vehicle maintenance and related safety and standards. Industry-accepted procedures for accident investigation and prevention. Labor relations and employment law. Familiarity with employee contracts and processes. Skills in management of emergency situations. Ability to respond appropriately and timely in crisis.
Ability To:
Maintain attention to detail, confidentiality and ability to meet deadlines and schedules. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule, and use resources; reach logical conclusions and make high quality decisions involving others appropriately in the decision-making processes; and act and accept responsibility for actions and consequences. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, using language that is appropriate for the person or group. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and interact successfully with district & school district administrative, transportation staff, and labor representatives, including perceiving the needs and concerns of others; assisting others in resolving conflicts; motivating others; and design programs to assist others in meeting organizational goals.
Physical/Mental/Motor Demands:
While performing duties of this position, the employee experiences frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, via video conference and computers, or over the telephone. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time.
Vision:
Frequent near acuity, occasional far acuity, and color vision. Vision to read printed and online materials, computer screens, or other monitoring devices. Strength is generally sedentary/light - exert force up to 10-25 lbs., occasionally; 10 lbs. frequently; negligible force, constantly. Work Environment Climate-controlled office setting with temperatures ranging from mild to moderate cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods. While performing the duties of this position, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communication. Work Schedule - Days and hours (listed above) are subject to change depending on program and district needs. Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays - Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement Collective Bargaining Agreements as negotiated.

When employees meet plan requirements and retire, they are guaranteed a monthly benefit for the rest of their life from the employer-funded pension. Employees can also participate in voluntary savings programs to increase retirement savings such as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program or by participating in a 403(b) retirement plan through the District's plan manager, OMNI.
